Understand the definition, scope and limitation of Non Conventional energy, sustainability
and their measures

Analyse the advantage and disadvantage of biomass energy, geothermal energy and Fuel
cell technology

Identify energy conservation strategies

Design Various types of energy system using Non Conventional Energy resourses

Introduction to Solar Energy : Sun as a source of Energy, Sun, Earth Radiation
Spectrums, Extraterrestrial and Terrestrial Radiation, Spectral Energy Distribution of
Solar Radiation, Depletion of Solar Radiation, Measurements of Solar Radiation, Solar
Radiation Data, Solar Time, Solar Radiation Geometry, Solar day length, Empirical
Equations for Estimating Solar Radiation, Hourly Global. Diffuse and Beam Radiation
on Horizontal Surface Under Cloudless Skies, Solar Radiation on Inclined Plane

Ocean and Geothermal Energy : Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, Wave and
tidal energy - Availability, geographical distribution, Power generation using OTEC,
History and Introduction of Geothermal Energy, Energy extraction of Geothermal
Energy, Geothermal fields, Limitation of Geothermal Energy, Future Scope
Unit IV
Wind Energy : Principle of wind blow, Design of windmills, Wind turbines sizes,
Energy Estimation - Site selection considerations, components of WECS - Advantages
and disadvantages of WECS - Design consideration wind mills, Aerofoil theory,
analysis of aerodynamic forces acting on the blade
Unit V
Biomass Energy : Biomass Sources and its conversion techniques, Biomass
Liquefaction, Biomass Gasification, Gasifiers - up draft, downdraft and fluidized bed
gasifiers, Thermo-chemical conversion of biomass, Aerobic and anaerobic bio
conversion process for bio-gas production, Digesters - Fixed and floating digester
biogas plants, economics of biomass power generation, Power generation from liquid
waste, Fermentation, pyrolysis, gasification and combustion- Analytical analysis
Unit VI
Energy Conversion Systems : Basic principle of thermo-electric and thermo-ionic
power generations, Fuel cell principle, types, conversion efficiency, applications,
Magneto hydrodynamic power generation, Hydrogen energy - Production, storage,
transportation
