Angle of Attack Adjustment

The Easy Screed extension has an external angle of atlack adjustment on each
extension. This is a critical adjustment for mat texture between the main screed and Easy Screed
extension. Whenever changing this adjustment, it is necessary to turn the berm jack in the same
direction that you turn the angle of atlack.

The berm jack has a course thread and the angle of atlack jack is a fine thread. When you

turn the angle of atlack jack, go to the outside of the Easy Screed extension and unlock the

berm jack and turn the berm jack in the same direction until null. Then re-Iock the berm jack.

By raising the bull nose on the Easy Screed extension, we force more mix under the
extension. If you raise the bull nose up too high, a shiny mat will occur behind the extension. Too
low and a loose mat will occur behind the extension.

When the angle of atlack on the extension is too high, the main screed will lay a loose
mat because we are transferring the weight from the main screed to the extension. When the
angle of atlack is too low, the main screed will be tighter than the extension .

...Summary: OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO LAY A UNIFORM MAT.

Whether the mat is loose and open or tight and shiny behind the extension, it must be
uniform. If the mat under the main screed is loose and open and the mat under the extension is tighl
and shiny, You must lower the angle of attack under the extension until the entire mat is uniform.

If the mat under the main screed is tight and shiny and the mat under the Easy Screed
extension is loose and open, you must raise the angle of attack on the extension until the entire
mat is uniform.

The following pictures explain what to do to correct the mat.

Page: 1
This mat (under the screed extension)
is too tight and shiny. The angle of
anack jack should be turned
approximately one revolution Counter
clockwise to push the bull nose of the
screed extension down. This will allow
weighl to be transferred to the main
screed from the screed extension.
When turning the angle of attack
jack It will be necessary to turn the
berm screw in the same direction
until the berm screw is null.

If the mat is loose under the screed

extension then it will be necessary 10
raise the bull nose on the screed
extension. To raise the bull nose
under the screed extension turn the
angle of attack jack clockwise, this will
allow more mix to feed under the
screed extension and transfer more
weight from the main screed to the
screed extension. When turning the
angle of attack jack it will be
necessary to turn the berm screw
in the same direction until the berm
screw is null.

This is the correct angle of attack.

Wear Plate Adjustment

The screed extensions slide in and oul on bronze aluminum wear plates. There is a fixed plate on
the lop of the slide track, a floating one on the front face of the slide track and a floating one on
the bottom of the slide track. The lOp one can't be adjusted but the front one and the bottom one
can. When the screed extensions gel 10058 when you run them out it is necessary to adjust them
tight again. Please follow the steps in this manual 10 tighten the screed extensions.

!---Raise the screed in the air.

2---Run the screed extension oul all the way.

3Grease the wear plates.

4---Lower the screed on the ground Cind slope the screed extension so the main screed just starts
to raise off the ground. By raising the main screed off the ground you are taking the weight off the
screed extension so thai you can adjust the far inside adjusting bolt see photo # 1.

5---Loosen the lock nut in photo #1 at least 4-6 turns.

6---Turn the inside bolt shown in photo # 1 until the bolt is completely tight.

7---5tart the paver up and raise the screed all the way and lock the screed on the safety tocks. (It
will not be necessary for Ihe screed to be on the ground again for the rest of Ihe adjustments.)

8---Aemove the slope out of the extension.

9---At this time run the screed extension in all the way. If the screed extension slows down or
stops you have adjusted the bolt in photo # 1 to tight, it will be necessary to run the extension out
all the way and back off on the bolt 1/4 turn and then try running the extension back in. Continue
10 repeat this step unlil the extension runs in and out without slowing down or stopping.
Then tighten the Jock nUl.

- Loosen tock nut

nghlen botl.
Then remove
the slope and
run the
extension in to
make sure that
it is not to tight.
10Run the extension back out all the way and from the rear of the extension adjust the bolt as
shown in photo ## 2 by turning the bolt counter clockwise until snug. This will push the wear plate
up against the tube that it is sliding on. Run the screed extension in all the way to make sure that
it isn't too tight. If it is 100 tight the extension will slow down when running the extension in.

11---When adjusting the next bolt, it is important that the extension be in a position that it is
pushing the wear plate up against the tube that it is sliding on. See Photo ## 3
Adjust bolt and make sure that it isn't too tight by running the extension in and out.

12--Adjust the next bolt the same as step 11.

13-To Adjust the front wear plate (see photo # 4) loosen the lock nuts and tighten the two bolls
and then back them off 1/2 tum. Proceed 10 the other screed extension.

Angle of Attack Adjustment

The following picture is showing several different mallextures. The screed in this picture is laying
down 3- of asphalt on the righl hand side and scratching on the left hand side. The left hand
screed extension, when scratching, is lifting the weight from the main screed. If you look at the
mat in figure 2 it is a loose mat alilhe way to the center of the screed because there is basically
no PSI under the screed because of Ihe left hand screed extension scratching. The whole lett
hand side of the screed is in reality, just a strike off, and not a screed. On the other hand if we
look at the right hand side we are laying 3" of asphalt, and the mat texture looks relatively good
because there is weight on the mal from 1he screed.
If we look real close 10 the mat in figure 4, and compare it to figure 3 we see the results of too
much angle of anack in the right hand screed extension. This should this should be decreased
until the mat looks like figure 3.

Pre-Strike-Off Adjustments
The front of the EASY SCREED III is formed with a radius that is
equal to the extension screeds. In most cases, the pre strike-off plates should
be adjusted so that they are above the top edge of the bend in the bull nose.
This is 1/2" above the bottom of the screed plate.
Due to the number of different mix designs, it may be necessary to
adjust the pre strike-off plates to force the screed to ride correctly over the
mat being laid.
Look at the side of the screed while it is paving. In order to get the
maximum of life from a screed plate, the screed must be riding correctly over
the mat while it is paving. If the screed is tipped forward on the nose, the
front section of the screed will have excess wear (see figure 3). Also if the
screed is tipped too far back, the rear section of the screed will have excess
wear (see figure 4). The screed should be tipped up slightly in the front so
that the weight of the screed is evenly distributed across the screed plate (see
figure 5).
If you lower the pre strike-off plates, you will decrease the amount of
material felt at the front of the screed, causing the front of the screed to drop
in comparison to the rear of the screed. If you raise the pre strike-off plates
the opposite will happen. Adjusting the pre strike-off plates will not
necessarily change the depth at which you are paving, but will change the
attitude of the screed as it passes over the mat.
Use the adjusting bolts located at the top of the mold board of the main
screed frame to adjust the height of the plates. Turn the bolts counter
clockwise to raise the plates and clockwise to lower the plates.
The factory setting on the pre strike-off plate is at least 1" above the
bottom of the main screed plate. If you find it necessary to adjust the plates to
do a particular job, try starting by adjusting the plates to 1/2" above the
screed and fine tune from there.
**NOTE** If there is too much angle of attack in the extensions, the
main screed will have a tendency to ride on its nose. Be certain the angle of
attack is adjusted correctly on each extension before attempting to adjust the
pre strike-off plates to correct a screed ride problem. Refer to angle of attack
adjustment earlier in this manual.
Leveling

Before starting the leveling you must adjust the wear plales. (See wear plate adjustments)

Leveling the screed extensions to the main screed is a direct relationship to mat quaJity and perfonnance of

the screed. it is very important Ihal the following steps be done with the best of your ability. We at factory

perform the leveling process within thousands of an inch.

Remember there is never enough time to do it right the first

time but always enough time to do it over again!
l---Run the extensions all the way out and remove the front covers on the screed extensions.
2-With the screed raised and on the screed locks we need 10 adjust the slope cylinder so when it is fully
retracted the cylinder is not pulling down on the upper unillOO much or maybe not enough. To accomplish
this slope the extension a little and then retract the cylinder. Just when the cylinder is at the bonom of the
suoke the top of the cylinder should move to the rear of the screed 1/4 inch. (See photo 1) To exteod the
stroke of the cylinder loosen the lock out with a 1-1/8 Th. wrench. With a 7/8 wrench tum Ihe cylinder rod
clock wise 1/2 tum. To len then the stroke of the c Iinder rum tne c Jinder rod the opposite direction.
When properly adjustcd the slope bracket will
pulJ back to the rear of the screed 1/4". Whcn this
pulls back the 1/4" the slope cylindcr stroke
should be retracted completely. Adjust the length
of the stroke of the cylinder as necessary.

Loosen lock nut with

11/8 Th. wrench.

to lengthen the slope
cylinder. and counter clock
wise to shorten the stroke.

3---With the front cover removed and the bolt in the back of the screed extension removed (see photo 2)
the first step is to get the top of the slide track perfectly level with the bottom of the screed extension.
What we need is a perfectly rectangular box sliding in and out in front of the main screed.

To accompI:sh this we start WIth a four foot

4---The next step is to hold the level as shown in (photo 4) and run the screed extension up or down until
the very back of the screed extension bottom is in contact with the straight edge.
5---With the straight edge in place as shown in (photo # 5) have somebody run the extension in all the

The screed bottom of the extension should ride on the straight edge. (Note: 1 you are leveling a used
