Targeted Learning Objectives: Students will effectively: - Write and solve systems of equations representing real world scenarios. - NETS-S 1 & 3 - Collaborate to solve problems and create a product demonstrating understanding. - NETS-S 6 - Create and design a google slide presentation using desmos to demonstrate understanding of linear programming. - NETS-S 4 - SC Curriculum Standard: ACE.3 - Use systems of equations and inequalities to represent constraints arising in real-world situations. Solve such systems using graphical and analytical methods, including linear programing. Interpret the solution within the context of the situation. (Limit to linear programming.) Rationale Linear Programming is a difficult topic for students to fully comprehend and fully understand. Typically, students are asked to graph the systems of equations by hand, and use these graphs to determine the solution that satisfies the desired outcome. The particular group of students that I am working with this year have a particularly difficult time in their math classes. They are hard workers, and willing to work, but many have already taken the course at least once before. I knew that these students struggled with graphing equations, and I knew that that struggle would hinder them from fully demonstrating how well they understood the concept of linear programming as a whole. I decided to use the graphing application desmos, combined with the creation of a google slide presentation to help students overcome the barrier that graphing difficulties presented, allowing them to fully demonstrate their understanding of linear programming. I had students create a presentation that demonstrated their understanding rather than just answering the questions, as it allowed them to practice important technological skills that are needed of current digital learners. Students were able to learn how to use google applications with ease, and create a presentation that was both organized in a manner that was functional and aesthetically pleasing from a design standpoint. Students worked with a partner to work to improve communication and collaboration skills. All of my students have access to a district provided tabet, so they were easily capable of using the technology needed to complete this project. Students were provided with an individual template on google classroom. They had to graph their systems using desmos and transfer that information their google slides. The project was submitted by students using google classroom. Summary of Significance The assignment functioned as a means to teach students how to model and solve real- world problems by using graphs of linear functions. This particular groups of students struggle with basic mathematical concepts, especially graphing. In an effort to remove the obstacle that poor graphing skills creates, I designed a project that incorporated technology, specifically the use of the desmos graphing application, to allow student to demonstrate their knowledge of linear programming without the difficulties imposed by their understanding of graphing. I also recognize the importance of developing modern, digital skills that will transfer to their future coursework and job skills. I had students design a presentation the demonstrated both their knowledge of linear programming, and ability to manipulate and use digital programs in conjunction with google applications.
