ABSTRACT

The project GLOVE INTERPRETER AS PC ASSIST is an advanced design of a Human

Computer Interface (HCI) using wireless and accelerometer technology, for better interaction
facility with computer and serves to be of great use to physically challenged people. To ensure
wearable computing to be more widely accepted, the associated Human-Computer Interface will
have to move past today's keyboard, keypad, touch screen, and any other bulky hand-held
interfaces to allow a user to specify their input through their fingers without taking their eyes and
attention off their immediate focus and without disturbed attention. As a result, this leads to
invention of a wearable system to track hand gestures with the help of an accelerometer. The
primary goals of the system are to have a comfortable and easily wearable device without
interfering with other everyday activities while tracking particular movements of hand that could
be used to control a wearable mouse or assist in interaction with ubiquitous or other wearable
devices. The technique of Gesture Recognition provides an efficient Human-Computer interface
for interactive and intelligent computing.
INTRODUCTION

Recently, due to digitization in every field, data processing speeds have increased
dramatically, with computers being advanced to the levels where they can assist humans in
complex tasks. Yet, input technologies seem to cause a major bottleneck in performing some of
the tasks by under-utilizing the available resources and usage restriction as a result of cost
constraint. Compared to the optical mouse which offers a limited range of length of connecting
cable and also they require a surface to work on, the wireless in not of much use other than allowing
for a desktop with fewer wires attached. HUMAN COMPUTING INTERACTION (HCI) is one
of the important area of research were people try to improve the computer technology. Gesture is
a very natural human communication capability.
Human computer interaction (HCI) also referred as Man-Machine Interaction (MMI) refers
to the relation between the human operator and the computer or rather specifically the machine.
Since the role of human operator is very significant in operating the machine, it is important that
the two main characteristics should be considered when designing a HCI system i.e., the
functionality and usability. Here system functionality refers to the set of functions or services that
the system equips to the users, while system usability refers to the level and scope that the system
can operate and perform specific user purposes efficiently. Any system that achieves a suitable
balance between these concepts can be considered as influential performance and powerful system
The project presents a novel method to control computer mouse cursor movement with
hand movement. Using this system, persons with disabilities, handicapped people who can no
longer use their hands and even patients who are paralyzed from shoulder downwards, can use
computer for Internet browsing, communication, environmental control, source of information and
entertainment. Simple head movements dont require too much energy, and neither does eye
blinking. Therefore users wont get tired from using this device, and in contrast, theyll get exercise
on the neck, which tends to be the problem for most regular computer users.
EXISTING SYSTEM

A normal mouse typically controls the motion of a pointer in two dimensions in a

graphical user interface (GUI). The mouse turns movements of the hand backward and forward,
left and right into equivalent electronic signals that in turn are used to move the pointer. The
relative movements of the mouse on the surface are applied to the position of the pointer on the
screen, which signals the point where actions of the user take place, so hand movements are
replicated by the pointer. Clicking or hovering (stopping movement while the cursor is within the
bounds of an area) can select files, programs or actions from a list of names, or (in graphical
interfaces) through small images called "icons" and other elements.

Problem with existing system

The computer mouse is a widely-used computer input device, which most computer users are
familiar with.
However, it does come with disadvantages, the most prominent of which is that many people
still use a mouse incorrectly.
Using Computer Mice Can Lead to Injury
As a regular computer user, the biggest problem I've found with computer mice is that
they encourage repetitive movements of the wrist and hand.
After regular prolonged use of this mouse, we can find that the tendons on the back of
our hand and wrist can really ache.
A Computer Mouse Requires Space
If you use a laptop, then you will already have a track-pad built into your machine, in which
case, a mouse is something else you will need to carry with you. Often, if you are away
from home or from the office, you will struggle to find a space where you can successfully
use a mouse, since it requires a flat and steady surface. With modern high resolution
desktops and large screens, mice either need to operate at a similarly-high resolution, (in
which case they can be extremely sensitive to movement and difficult to use accurately),
or they need a lot of clear desktop space in which to move around.

Health and Safety When Using A Computer Mouse

Coming back to the point I made earlier, it is important to ensure that you are using your
mouse comfortably - so make sure that your wrist is not resting on the desk or a wrist rest.
Ironically, these can actually make matters worse, by encouraging the wrong posture. Make
sure that your wrist can move freely, since the extra degrees of motion this allows will
reduce the number of smaller, more repetitive movements that you make.
PROPOSED SYSTEM

All the disadvantages of the existing system can be overcome with the proposed system. The
project presents a novel method to control computer mouse cursor movement with hand movement.
Using this system, persons with disabilities, handicapped people who can no longer use their hands
and even patients who are paralyzed from shoulder downwards, can use computer for Internet
browsing, communication, environmental control, source of information and entertainment.
Simple head movements dont require too much energy, and neither does eye blinking. Therefore
users wont get tired from using this device, and in contrast, theyll get exercise on the neck, which
tends to be the problem for most regular computer users.
The system uses flex sensors to detect the user's hand bending in order to direct mouse
movement on the monitor. The clicking of the mouse is activated by the user's hand. Bluetooth is
used to transmit the motion data to the base unit. It is based on a radio link that provides fast and
reliable transmission of both voice and data. It can carry up to three high-quality voice channels
simultaneously at speeds to 1 Megabit/sec, even in noisy environments. It allows users to connect
to a wide range of devices at one time without cables, and potentially without actively initiating
the connection. The base unit receives the signals from Bluetooth. The controller determines the
necessary actions and establishes connection with PC using RS232 communication.
Here this come under advanced methodology in the aspect that it make use of special
sensory unit call flex sensors to assist user to simply control the devices inside the room such as
fanlight control etc. and to turn the power on and off the personal computer and any other devices
which user need to control.
