Abstract: Design of a 1200 kV power transformer is a real challenge for designer from dielectric
point of view. It is possible to design a more compact transformer meeting even higher insulation
levels with lesser insulation content. This has been possible with the introduction of sophisticated
Computer-Aided Electrostatic Field Analysis. Analysis of the Lead Exit assembly of 1200 kV HV
is presented. Two-dimensional contours of the three-dimensional equipotential and equigradient
contours are presented in selected vertical planes. The paper gives an insight into various high
stress areas of a 1200 kV Lead assembly and measures taken to improve the stresses.

1. INTRODUCTION

For the EHV transformers, apart from the main

windings, Lead design is one of the most critical areas.
Withstand under switching and lightning impulse and
power frequency over voltages are to be critically
examined. These surges put very high electric field
stress near the Lead which may be an area of concern.
The paper describes Electrostatic filed analysis of Lead
exit of a 1200 kV Transformer by Boundary Element
Method. The Dielectric level of 1200 kV winding is
