EDDY CURRENT TESTING (Level I&II)

__________________________________________________________________________________

Course overview:
The training course which takes place for 10 days is intended to provide knowledge in theoretical
and practical aspects of ET which helps trainee able to

Identify the suitability of the method

Develop inspection technique and written instruction
Interpret and evaluate the result

Course contents:
Classroom Training:
A brief history of ET, Fundamentals of ET, Definitions, Electrical units, properties of Eddy current, Skin effect,
Phase lag, Lift off, Effects of changing parameters, Impedance plane, Normalization, Frequency selection,
Conductivity measurement, Thickness measurement, Characteristic frequency, Law of similarity,
Ferromagnetic testing, Loading, Types of eddy current probes, Theory of electronic bridges, Differential and
absolute mode of operation, Signal analysis, Tube testing, Fill factor, Impedance curves, Multi frequency
testing, Filtering, Low pass band pass and high pass filters, Remote field inspection, Advantages and
Disadvantages of eddy current testing, Calibration blocks, Selection of method, Codes standards &
procedures, Application of technique, Interpretation & evaluation of results, Defect characterization,
Reporting, Acceptance standard, Evaluation of equipment, Material processing.

Practical training:

For Practical training, the candidate is required to test at least three components on which the exam
is being taken. Each test result will be reported in a report format specific to that component. The
student will learn to evaluate and report discontinuities. Prior to testing, the candidate will be
learning the methods of Calibrating ET equipment using reference blocks

*Apart from theory and practical the candidate will also be trained to produce written instruction on
one of the components tested.

Exams:

Theory exam in general (40 questions) and specific (30 questions) will be given as multiple
choice questions.
Practical exam involves testing of two components where the trainee shall show capabilities
in the aspects he/she trained for.
After completion of practical exam, the trainee produces a written instruction for one
component he/she tested.
The pass percentage for individual exam is 70% and the overall score shall be 80% for the
award of level 2 certificate.
