Worksheet: Your Territory Map

South Island- Lyackson Mustimuhw of the Coast Salish

peoples: Lyackson Mustimuhw are a Coast Salish Hulquminum
community of 200 members presently based in Chemainus,
Vancouver Island. Valdes Island is our ancestral territory and we
currently manage three land reserves which comprise a third of
Valdes Island, where we continue to engage traditional land-use
practices on a seasonal basis.

Food gathering: Your job is to gather different roots/shoots

Plants are harvested at different times of the season depending on what
they are used for. Along the coast, many of our camps and villages were
located in estuaries, where there was an abundance of the types of foods
we wanted. Some nations held a First Roots ceremony to show respect for
the roots before the community went digging for their needs.
