Worksheet: Your Territory Map

North Island- Tlatlasikwala Nation of the Kwakwaka'wakw:


We are the descendants of the Tlatlasikwala, Nakumgilisala and
Yutlinuk peoples. Our Territory covers the lands and waters of
northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada. Our home
village is at beautiful Bull Harbour on Hope Island.

Food gathering: Your job is to collect herring roe


Herring Roe: Herring and herring roe have always been an important
part of the Coastal Fishery. On the coast, herring are harvested from
late winter into spring. Herring roe are gathered using hemlock
branches, seaweed or harvested off of kelp. Herring roe are nutritious
and delicious and are part of an important fishery for many coastal
communities. On Northern Vancouver Island, herring roe are a
feature at feasts.
