Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Kayla Kish Date: Day 5

Group Size: Whole Class Allotted Time 45 min Grade Level 3rd

Subject or Topic: How Do We Affect Each Other

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

S3.D.3.1.2

Describe the predictable patterns of change that occur over time in the observable shape of the
Moon.

3.3.3.B1 -Relate the rotation of the earth and day/night, to the apparent movement of the sun,
moon, and stars across the sky. Describe the changes that occur in the observable shape of the
moon over the course of a month.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
The students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of how the Earths rotation
and the sun affect the world we live on.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1.Exit Slip 1. The students will be fill out and hand in an
2. Earth, moon, and sun activity exit slip that expresses their new knowledge.
. 2. The students will create an Earth, moon,
and sun activity.

Assessment Scale:
The students will show that they are proficient in knowing the Earths rotation around
the sun and what happens when it rotates, and the revaluation of the Earth.

Subject Matter/Content:
The Earths rotation around the sun.
Prerequisites:
The moon phases: the suns illumination causes the moon to look different.
The moon has phases
What the sun is
What the moon is
What the Earth is
Key Vocabulary:
Rotation: the spinning of the planet on its own axis (takes 24 hours)
Revolution: the movement of the Earth going around the sun (takes 365 days)
Orbit: a repeating path that one object takes around another
Year: 365 days
Day: 24 hours
Axis: line that starts at the top of the Earth at the north pole and goes completely
through Earth's center and ends at the south pole.
Northern Hemisphere: the half of Earth that is north of the equator.
Southern Hemisphere: the half of the earth between the South Pole and the equator.
Content/Facts:
The Earths revolution and rotation happen at the same time.
The Earth rotates on its axis. For a full rotation to take place it takes 24 hours which is
also known as one day.
The Earths revolution takes 365 days, which also is known as a year. This is when the
Earth revolves around the sun on its orbit.
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
To introduce the lesson, the teacher will use two balls. One ball will look like the sun
and the other will look like the Earth. The teacher will demonstrate how the earth
rotates as it makes its revolution around the sun.

Development/Teaching Approaches
Prior Knowledge:
First, the teacher will discuss background knowledge with the students.
The teacher will do a quick review on the moons phases
o The teacher will tell the students, the moon needs the sun to shine bright and
show its different phases. When the sun is shining on the moon, it is
illuminating it so that we can see part of it. The sun only illuminates part of
the moon, and that is the part we can see. This happens because part of the
moon is facing away from the Earth
Introduction:
The teacher will start by holding up two balls. One ball will look like the sun and the
other will look like the Earth. The teacher will then have a student come up and hold
up the sun ball. The sun is always in the same place. The teacher will then demonstrate
to the class how the Earth revolves around the sun by walking around and circling the
sun. As the teacher is doing this, she/he will also rotate spin the ball in their hands.
This shows the students how the Earth rotates and makes revolutions around the sun.
The teacher will explain to the students by saying, when the Earth completes its
revolution around the sun, it takes 365 days, which equals a year. When the sun
rotates it spins on its own axis and takes 24 hours, which is known as a year.
Next, the teacher will ask the student to go back to his/ her seat.
The video:
The teacher will then pull the video up and hand out the video worksheet that goes with
it.
The worksheet contains keywords and vocab that the students should know.
The students should draw or write the definition of each key term on the sheet while it
is being discussed in the video.
Earth, moon, and sun activity:
After the video, the teacher will ask the students to put everything away and to get their
crayons ready.
The teacher will then pass out their activity sheet.
The teacher will go over the instructions that are on the activity sheet.
o The teacher will explain, first, your will color in the Earth, moon, and sun.
then, you will cut out the patterns. Next, connect the Earth to the sun with the
fastener on the small square. After that, connect the moon to the Earth with the
fastener on the small square. Lastly, show the movement of the Earth ad moon
by moving the Earth around the sun, and the moon around the Earth.
As the students are doing the activity the teacher will go around the room to see if they
need help.
Closure:
The students will be asked to get into groups of two. Once they are in groups of two,
each group will be called up to demonstrate to the class how the Earth completes
revolutions around the sun and rotates on its axis. They will use the sun and Earth
balls for this.
The exit slip:
The students will be given an exit slip
They have to answer the questions by drawing or writing the answers on the slip then
hand it in on their way out.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
The teacher will ask the students to get into groups of two. Every group will get a
chance to come up and demonstrate to the class how the Earth rotates and completes
revelations around the sun.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
The students can draw, or write their answers on the exit slip
The students can draw, or write the definitions on the video definition sheet

Materials/Resources:
Earth, moon, and sun activity sheet
Exit slip
