Summary 
Written by Luke, a physician who travelled with Paul, and Paul refers to him as "the beloved physician" 
in Col 4:14.  
It was written to be a sequel to the life of Christ in the Gospel he wrote. 
It starts with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus, then showing how the church was 
established in Jerusalem first  having Peter playing a major role there, and how it progressed further to 
the gentiles through Paul's life.  
  
Acts can only be properly studied if seen as the fulfilment of God's promises in the O.T. to, through 
Abraham's offspring, bless "every family on earth". 
The following prophecies in the O.T. are directly fulfilled in Acts: 
• I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh
• I will give you a new heart   
  
It's important to understand that this is our story ‐ our lives are directly connected to what happened 
there in Jerusalem 2000 years ago. We can take from this book a very practical teaching for our lives 
  

Chapter 1 
  
 4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem 
until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized 
with[b] water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 
  
WAIT ‐ don't go until it's the right time.  
THE GIFT ‐ the present ‐ His Spirit in us is the PRESENT he promised us. 
  
Why the Holy Spirit? 
• We were the only creatures made as a portal between the 4 dimensions we live in and 
the dimension of the spirit (Rob Bell message)
• Our relationship with God was cut off, so the connection with the spiritual was also cut 
off. 
• The bridge, the connection, the way back to him was made through Jesus. We had to 
be fixed (forgiven) and "upgraded" ‐ we were off line, we are now online, connected to 
heavens, to the dimension of the Spirit again.
  
BAPTIZED with the Holy Spirit 
Now that we have a connection to heaven again, The Father "downloaded" the Spirit into us. We 
are now v2.0, new creatures. V1 was buggy, infected with viruses, no firewalls. The new version is 
the best ever you. 
  
 6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come 
for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” 
  
The issue of the Roman occupation was so strong in their hearts, that even after seen Jesus back to life, 
they are still missing the point of why he came.  
  
 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—
in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 

  
They were asking about the kingdom of Israel being restored, and Jesus will point them back to His  
Kingdom.  
  
To restore the kingdom to Israel, you need a kind of power ‐ soldiers, horses, armies, swords, 
spears, etc.  
To have my kingdom coming to all the earth you need another kind of power ‐ the one given by 
the Holy Spirit. The kingdom expands as you become my witnesses, and you do it not through your 
own strength, but through the power that comes from my Spirit. 
  
It's not supposed to stay where you are ‐ you have to take it further, from your house to your 
neighbourhood, from them to the city and then to other cities, etc.  
  
  
 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a 
mile.[c] 13 When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they 
were staying. 
 Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, 
Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas 
(son of James). 14 They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with 
Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.

That’s how they waited, following Jesus directions ‐ by being together, united in prayer.  
Not just united ‐ but united in prayer.

Interesting ‐ the brother of Jesus doubted him in the beginning, but now they are together waiting 
for the promised He made. 
  

Chapter 2 
  
 1 On the day of Pentecost[a] all the believers were meeting together in one place. 
  
Pentecost ‐ "Day of Firstfruits" ‐ a Jewish Festival. 
John 12 24I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it 
remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 
The first fruits of the death/resurrection of Jesus are about to blossom  
  
"They were all with one accord in one place" 
  
That's the right way again to wait ‐ one accord, together. 
  
• Intellectual unanimity
• Emotional rapport
• Family like kind of feeling and behaviour
  
 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 
Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy 
Spirit and began speaking in other languages,[b] as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

 37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, 
“Brothers, what should we do?”  
 38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized 
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift 
of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the 
Gentiles[h]—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” 40 Then Peter continued 
preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this 
crooked generation!”  
 41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—
about 3,000 in all. 
  
  
Some lessons to learn here: 
• God spoke to them and told them to wait, they obeyed and kept the right attitude of unity 
and prayer.
• Then GOD did something that amazed lots of people and it opened a way for their faith to 
be shared. 
• Peter was not trying to gather them ‐ they were gathered by what God did
• The supernatural sparkled curiosity and controversy. We may always have people who will 
doubt. 
• Peter took the opportunity. He was filled by the Holy Spirit and spoke now with a new 
authority. 
• A clear pattern: REPENT, BE BAPTIZED, RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
• The promise is for all who have been called by the Lord our God ‐ only those who were 
called by Him will believe. 
  
  
How that affected their lives: 
  
 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, 
and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[i]), and to prayer. 
  
• They DEVOTED themselves ‐ commitment. To what:
• Word of God
• Coming together (meetings, etc.)
• Eating together
• Prayer
  
 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many 
miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and 
shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared 
the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, 
met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and 
generosity[j]—47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the 
people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. 
  
  
  
Chapter 3 
  
Miracles being performed by the apostles 
  
 4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 The lame man 
looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. 6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or 
gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,[a] get 
up and[b] walk!” 
  

This open for him an opportunity to speak again in a public place.  
Peter doesn't take glory for himself for the healing: 
  
 12 Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. “People of Israel,” he said, 
“what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this 
man walk by our own power or godliness? 13 For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and 
Jacob—the God of all our ancestors—who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by 
doing this. This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before Pilate, 
despite Pilate’s decision to release him. 14

This won't make many people happy, specially when Peter mentions Jesus resurrection. They have 
now different kind of reaction from the first message: were sent to Jail. 
  
What we learn here: 
• The witnessing of our faith will always produce different kind of reactions. We should 
not be surprised. 
  
  

Chapter 4 
  
Despite the controversy, many people believed: 
  
But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of 
believers now totaled about 5,000 men, not counting women and children.[a] 
  
  
Before the Sanhedrin: 
  
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they 
marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, 
they could say nothing against it.  

  
Two witnesses: 
• The transformation of their own lives
• The healing of someone else
  
Their threat: 
  
18 So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 

  
The answer: 
19But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. 20For we 
cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."  

  
 Back to the brotherhood: 
  
23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 
So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: 

  
Again ‐ ONE ACCORD 
  
Their prayer: 
  
... 
Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness 
they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs 
and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”  
  
What happened: 
  
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the 
Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. 

  
How they lived: 
  
32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he 
possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.

34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the 
proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.  

  

Chapter 5  
  
About GIVING ‐ Ananias and Sapphira  
  
They were esteemed 
  
12 And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one 
accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13 Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly.  

  
People began to come from surrounding cities 
  
16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by 
unclean spirits, and they were all healed. 

  
Apostles on trial again and now they are beaten 
  
So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted 
worthy to suffer shame for His[d] name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every 
house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. 
  
  

Chapters 6 and 7 
  
About Stephen  
• One of seven deacons chosen
• A man full of faith and power
 •Did great wonders among the people
•People were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke
  
He is falsely accused and then stoned to death, but before he died, he delivers an amazing 
message that is recorded in these chapters, showing how the coming of Jesus was the fulfilment of 
God's promises to his people, and how they sinned against God by killing him.  
  
Chapter 7 finishes like that: 
58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man 
named Saul.  

  
  

Chapter 8 
  
Persecution and Saul's role on it: 
  
 1 Now Saul was consenting to his death. 
At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; 
and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the 
apostles.

Chapter 9 
  
 1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to 
the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he 
found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to 
Jerusalem. 
3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard 
a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”

20 Immediately he preached the Christ[c] in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God.

23 Now after many days were past, the Jews plotted to kill him. 24 But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates 
day and night, to kill him. 25 Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket.

31 Then the churches[d] throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and 
in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.
