Engineering Solutions
Vaftsy can provide design support to your business.
We can engage in your design process, right from
Product conception to Product delivery
We shall add value to your business, in the
following areas
Increased Reliability of Products
Anticipation of Potential Problem Areas
Quicker Delivery of Design
Flexibility for Design Changes
FEA Introduction
FEA is methodology for Virtual analysis of
Engineering Components
FEA is aimed at simulating working conditions of
Products, and analyzing the performance of the
product.
FEA enables designer’s to anticipate problems with
components, and hence deliver better designs
CASE Study
FEA was done for a tooling component being
manufactured at one of our clients
We performed an analysis for Upper Punch being
used for Tablet manufacturing
The Data that is required for analysis, is
Material Properties (Young’s Modulus, Poisson's Ratio,
Yield Strength, Ultimate Strength)
Component Drawings
Boundary Conditions
CASE Study 3D Model
Vaftsy was provided with
drawings for the Upper
Punch
These Drawings were
converted in to Model
using software CATIA
CASE Study - Meshing
The CATIA Model, was
imported into
HYPERMESH and a
Graded Mesh was
generated for it.
Case Study - Solution
The working conditions
were then simulated on
ANSYS, by applying
suitable Boundary
Conditions
Case Study –Post Proc.
The results obtained from the FEA analysis were
POST PROCESSED using ANSYS
The POST PROCESSED plots, give information
about
The Magnitude of Maximum Stresses
The Critical Locations for Stresses
The Magnitude and Location of Maximum Deformation
The Directional Deformation Plots
Case Study - Results
Deformation Plot
Case Study - Results
Stress Plot
Case Study – Analysis
The Results highlighted critical sections in the Punch,
which were at the Punch Tip
Case Study – Analysis
The Directional Deformation results were more
conclusive, indicating, eccentric deformation at the
pentagon tip region than at the base
Case Study – Analysis
The Initial Analysis, indicated that the full load of
the machine, was detrimental to performance of
the component
Secondary Analysis was performed on the model,
to ascertain the safe limit of force.
The understanding of the Initial Analysis was
crucial for finalizing the parameters for Secondary
Analysis
Case Study – Findings
The Upper Punch might be
getting damaged because of
eccentric deformation at
pentagon tip.
It was essential to analyze the
Lower Punch for confirming
presence of eccentricity.
The eccentric deformation is
a direct result of the tablet
shape.
Specifically the relief of the
tablet surface, which leads to
weakening of the tip region
Case Study - Recommendations
Lower the force of impact. The process gives
acceptable results at 40% of total force.
Change the relief of the tablet surface.
Analysis of the lower punch will shed more light
on the performance of the Punches.
FEA Benefits
Modeling – 3-D models are easy to manipulate for
design improvements
Analysis of design- New products can be simulated
virtually, to anticipate and solve potential problems.
Wastage of time in prototyping is cut down.
Understanding phenomena, empowers one to modify
design.
Time gap between conception phase to product release is
reduced tremendously.
In summary, it is an efficient and cost effective design
methodology.
