COURSE SYLLABUS
COURSE IDENTITY
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course aims to develop students capability to communicate in English for various purposes
in nursing context both written and spoken. Students will learn to develop their vocabulary and
terminologies related to nursing and the realisation in communication. How students develop
interpersonal and transactional communications for nursing purposes are also subjects under
the study.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students are able to explain terminologies related to nursing and apply
them in communication, develop interpersonal and transactional communication in nursing
contexts and perform procedures of nursing in English language.
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
MATERIALS
1. Nursing and medical terminologies: among others are parts of body and systems, aches and
pains, abbreviation in nursing, branches of medicine, wards and departments in hospital, vital
signs.
2. Interpersonal and transactional communication on various topics: greeting in hospital, nursing
instruction, admission, giving advice, giving direction, making calls and appointments, offering
food/drink, nursing assessment.
3. Techniques and terms of presentation, chairing a seminar.
4. Description
5. General writing skills

ACADEMIC CONDUCTS
1. All students should have minimal attendance of 80%
2. All students should have good attitude and activeness during the class
3. All students should have good participation in team work
4. All students should come on time. Students coming to the class 10 minutes late will be given
penalty. Students coming late more than 15 minutes may join the class but they should not
sign the attendance.
5. All students dress up with polite and appropriate clothes, no casual ones.
6. All students should submit assignments on time. Late submission of tasks will be given
penalty 10% decrease of the overall score or depending on the period of submission.
7. Lecturers have the right to delay the announcement of final score for students with
incomplete tasks/assignments.
8. All students should not do any cheatings and group work on exams.
9. Any updates about the class will be informed to the SIPEN.

Nursing procedure
Tasks / Assignments:
1) Task 1: Diary. The diary explains about what you have learnt within the course/and the other courses
and your reactions about it. You should finish one story every two weeks. Produce one recording of
your self for about 15 mins and submit it to your speaking practice facilitator.
2) Task 2: Write a description about a unit where you work or you intend to work in the future or a
patient you have ever taken care of (choose one only). Type in A4 paper, 12 font, times new roman,
margin 3 3 3 3, due on 27 Sept 2017 at 4 pm.
3) Task 3: Write a scenario of role play to be performed in group on 8 Nov 2017. The scenario should
consist of all the materials that had been taught. You can start to consult to your teacher from 18 Oct
2017.
4) Task 4: Prepare the media for presentation (health education) to be performed started from 15
Nov 29 Nov 2017. You can consult to your teacher (from 30 Oct 2017) before your presentation
schedule. Bring your paper and media (e.g. ppt, leaflet, mannequin, products, etc) during the
consultation.
5) Task 5: Write an argumentative paper. The paper contrasts two different opinions (pros and cons)
on ethic and legal issues in the medical and nursing settings. Each student should choose one topic

from some topics which had been decided by the lecturer. The paper is no less than 2 pages. You
should type in A4 paper, 12 font, times new roman, margin 3 3 3 3, due on 23 Nov 2017.
