Virtual reality & medical education: leg anatomy

Caption: Applications of virtual reality systems in medical education.

Here, two doctors use a system developed at NASA's Ames Research
Centre in Menlo Park, California, to study the anatomy of the human
leg. They both wear a headset equipped with 3-D video displays to view
the computer-generated graphical images - one is shown between the
two doctors. Physical exploration of the leg anatomy is afforded by
using the data glove, a black rubber glove with woven optical fibre
sensors, which relays data on their physical hand movements back to
the computer.

Virtual Reality for Medical Research, Education, and Therapy

Cyber anatomy educates people about the human body. Simulating a

surgery in Virtuo prepares medical practitioners for complex
surgeries. In the area of public health education, Virtual Reality can be
used to simulate the world from the perception of a person with
medical problems. For instance, by allowing users to experience how it
feels to be someone with impaired vision or on a wheel chair, the
government helps raise public awareness to provide better care for
handicapped citizens.

Any fan of Star Trek is familiar with the holodeck, a room devoted to
creating virtual environments that seem as real as anything in daily life.
The virtual reality room is not quite to that level of sophistication, but
they do allow one to be fully immersed in a simulation. Whether the
room is for training purposes (such as a flight simulator), or as a tool to
display data, theyre the closest weve come to our television
counterparts.

Entertainment and Culture Working Group

This Working Group focuses on Virtual Reality / Virtual Environment

entertainment applications and expectations within the European
market for the coming ten years. Such applications (3D games, art
visualised representations) have served as the first communication
means among VR applications and society and are still the most easy-to-
conceive.

This WG aims to provide the community with all the information to raise
awareness about the next generation of entertainment applications.
Additionally, this workgroup aims in bringing the INTUITION Network of
Excellence with needs and solutions for developing future applications.
This workgroup will investigate:

the need of the market and will define the requirement of

different entertainment platforms;
the Virtual Reality technologies that entertainment
applications may take further advantage of;
typical future Entertainment platforms in order to apply the
study results of the above two points on more concrete use
cases

3D Immersive Viewing System

Via Gadget Madness:

Now this is what I call a 3d Screen. The Visionstation is a 3D Immersive

Viewing System that can be used for many applications. Sure it can be
used for business and stuff but what I think we're all reallly interested in
is using it for gaming. This screen has a 160 degree display that uses the
depth of it to give off the illusion of 3D minus the goofy glasses. It is 1.5
meters tall and the price....well it isn't posted on their site. So....it is
probably a couple thousand dollars.
