PURPLE LINE: College readiness benchmark

Green box: Score range

Solid green Line: Subject Test score

________________________________________________________________________________________

COMPOSITE SCORE: overall average

ELA (Enlish Language Acquisition) : the rounded average of English, Reading, and Writing scores.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) : the rounded average of Math and Science.

- ACT also established a benchmark STEM score of 2

For probing:

The number of jobs in U.S. STEM occupations grew by 10.5 percent from May 2009 to May
2015more than twice the rate of growth of non-STEM occupations and this trend is not
expected to slow; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that computer occupations alone
will create nearly 500,000 new jobs between 2014 and 2024.
Do you know if the school is currently doing a program for ACT preparation? Or a question
specific to the person you reached.
To the PD person: Have you ever done any Professional Development for your teachers on the
ACT?
The common denominator of every district that is successful in significantly increasing ACT
scores is professional development.

Decoding the ACT is a comprehensive PD (Professional Development) program for your core
teachers that turns them into ACT experts.

This is a fun, engaging, and intensely practical event for your teachers that gives them the
tools they need to improve ACT scores by integrating strategies in their classes, so that
every day, in every class, your students are improving on the ACT.

o The program covers every aspect of successfully raising ACT scores, including student
motivation, time management and test-taking skills, and subject-specific content strategies.

Why YOU:
1. You know, we just heard back from a school (just like yours and heres how) that Ive worked with
and we doubled the number of students above a (accountability threshold) in one year. When we
meet Ill be able to go over with you what they did and how we could make that work for your
school.
2. While Im there, Id love to share with you this handout we have of 101 ways to motivate students
for the ACT. That might really get your teams gears clicking about ways to get students to care
about the test.
3. Thats a big deal, what you said about your students feeling overwhelmed by the timed tests. I
think while Im there Ill be able to share with you how our program is the best at addressing that
issue.
4. With your students scoring that low on reading, they are probably having trouble even getting
through the passages. We have the only program thats designed from the bottom up for students
at the lower score ranges in reading.
5. I can show you how having a program designed from the ground up for students like yours, in
lower score ranges, can make all the difference in the results.

Pain Questions:

1. What is your average ACT score? (when its not good)

2. How many of your students scored below (the accountability threshold) on the ACT?
3. What kind of improvements have you see over the past few years on your ACT scores?
4. (After they tell you about an ACT initiative) What kinds of score gains did you see from that
initiative? What was the teacher feedback? The students?
5. What is the minimal ACT score that the local colleges require to enter college remediation-free?
(You probably already know this, but getting the prospect to educate you might also make them
cry.)
6. (For territories that are newly adopting ACT or Aspire mandatory testing) What are you doing for
the new ACT Aspire? For the new ACT testing for all juniors?
7. Do some of your students blow off the ACT test on the mandatory testing date?
8. How are your teachers dealing with having to prep their students for the ACT on top of everything
else?
9. Do most of your students take the ACT seriously?
10. How do you think your students are able to deal with a timed test like the ACT? Have they ever
had to take timed tests before?
11. Are your students able to get all the way through the reading passages on the ACT?
12. What effect does the ACT have on your accountability scores (school report card)?
13. What effect did the ACT have on your accountability scores last year? What effect will it have this
year?
14. How important is the ACT in terms of your accountability scores?

Example:
Rep: Whats your average ACT scores?
Prospect: 15.3.
Rep: What sort of impact has that had (or will it have) on your school report cards?
Prospect: Its killing us. (The more common response is just hysterical laughter.)
Rep: And the problem is that the lower the students ACT score, the harder it is to increase their
score! Well, thats what I wanted to call you about
The follow-up question and the obvious but painful statement at the end nail the coffin on the
appointment happening.

The Cycle of a Call

1. Introduction: Say hello!
2. Context: Why are you calling?
3. Pain: Make sure the customer feels it.
4. The Ask: Would you like to meet with me at 2:00 or 3:00?
5. Why You: Remind them why this a good idea.
6. Deal with Objections: Their objection is exactly the reason they need to meet with you.
7. Broaden the Appointment to a Presentation: Pull in the whole decision team.

I called because I wanted to set up an appointment with you and talk about college readiness specifically
about ACT.
I noticed Warren HS s ACT average has been improving, first of all Congratulations. Well Weve been
working with a lot of schools and districts increase their average ACR scores, and I think our programs
can help you and your students get even a higher score.
Id appreciate if you give me a call and lets talk about how we can help you and your students get there.

IF ACT AVERAGE IS OK
I called because I wanted to set up an appointment with you and talk about college readiness specifically
about ACT.
I know that maintaining an ACT average that meets the National Benchmark score can be quite
challenging, and I wanted to talk to you and see how we can possibly work together to sustain a good
average year after year. Weve been working with a lot of schools and districts increase their average ACR
scores, and I think our programs can help you and your students get even a higher score.
Id appreciate if you give me a call and lets talk about how we can help you and your students get there.

FOR FOLLOW UP:

I was hoping we could set up a brief meeting to talk about college readiness, ACT to be specific. I was
thinking we could share ideas on how you prepare your students for the ACT and also give you an
overview of MasteryPreps programs. Weve been working with different schools and districts similar to
yours, and weve been successful in holistically preparing their students and increasing their ACT average
by as much as 2 points.

The results after using MasteryPrep were AMAZING! Out of 30 students TWENTY of them improved their
ACT scores!! Some as much as 7 points! I am sold on the wonders of MasteryPrep
