Importance of the language in medicine and in science

The good word

The good definition The good thought
The good sentence

Before science, before medicine, there is a tongue

Without a good language, there is no science

there is no good medicine

Choose the good word

a word reference to a perception,
to a sensation, to a feeling, to a concept.
Ex : plane (flying machine, noise, fear, holidays,
accident etc…)

Chose the good sentence

In the sentence,
the hierarchy of the words is primordial
structure of thought
Importance of syntax

In a book, as in a brain
there are two different aspects

1) The knowledge = bibliography

2) The structure of thought = book plane

Crude knowledge Structure Good sentences

The words Syntax Freedom to think
Copyright: Raphaël Nogier

www.nogier.info

Today, the problem to think is not the

knowledge, but the thought structure.

To think right, it is necessary to develop the ability to

link the words between them.
Mathematics mainly develop the notions of equality
but underestimate the notions of hierarchy.
The most important subject to develop the thought
structure is syntax.
Subject of the verb, direct object complement,
indirect object complement etc…

In Medicine, to do a diagnostic is not only

a question of knowledge but a question
of thought structure.
Because, the medical act consists to link
the signs between them and to order them
and to classify them.

The signs The thought structure The diagnostic

In ancient times, healers and even doctors used
bloodletting and cauterisations loco dolenti
to treat patients in the mediterranean basin.

Hippocrate (460-380 bc) : «Those diseases

which are not cured by medicines are cured
by the scalpel; those which are not cured by the

In 1951, Paul Nogier examines two patients

who have a scar on the inferior root of
anthelix.
The patients explain that they have been
treated for a sciatica by a quack, Mrs Barrin
from Marseille.
She treats only sciaticas, burning the anthelix.

The two patients explain that after the

cauterisation of anthelix,
the sciatica pain disappeared very
quickly.

1951- An unusual observation

• two patients suffering from a sciatica

are cured by a cauterization (burning)
of an ear point (Mrs Barrin)
• Paul Nogier tries to understand why
this point is effective on sciatica pain

Following this observation

Study of the «Mrs Barrin Point»

• This ear point was not known in acupuncture

• Paul Nogier tries out this point for all kind of pain
and notices that the puncture of this point is only
active on sciatica pain
• It is why Paul Nogier associates this point to the
area L5-S1. Consequently he formulates a
hypothesis of a possible auricular somatotopy

Research methods
• Paul Nogier employs methods based on
noci-ceptive stimulations
• a noci-ceptive stimulation of a body area
(periphery) creates on the ear a punctual
sensitivity disorder

1951 - 1963
Research methods
• « In healthy person, a properly chosen peripheral excitation, allows
collection of information on one of the ears which is always in the same
place, and refers to excitation in same physical area.»

Paul Nogier in Treatise of auriculotherapy. France: Maisonneuve, 1969

• «It becomes clear,” he continues, “that a pathological disorder could,

be a stimulator or a combination of stimulators, [that] manifest itself in
very precise points»

Procedures applied
Pathological correspondences:
a systematic research of vertebral or limb pain, in order to prove and to specify
the corresponding points on the auricle using a pressure probe.

Therapeutic proof: Study of therapeutic successes by using the detected points.

Particular observations: Study of some patients who show a particular sensitivity

and who were in a state such as a simple palpation of some ear points awakened
a diffuse pain in the corresponding peripheral area.

Experimental proof : Study by selective stimulations.

•Stimulation of peripheral area and collection of information present on the ear:
The stimulation consisted in cooling down for some instants a peripheral area
using some ice. As a result an excessive sensitivity to heat could be observed on
the auricle at the corresponding point. The presence of warmth on the point
becoming unbearable.
•Stimulation of ear points and study of the periphery: In a healthy person, the
stimulation of an ear point by heat changes the sensitivity of the corresponding
body part to cold.

Niboyet discovers the electrical
properties of the acupuncture points

The body acupuncture point can be found because they have

a lower electrical cutaneous resistivity
(Niboyet).

Paul Nogier applies this detection method on the ear. He

finds lower electrical resistivity points on the ear.
Consequently, he thinks that the ear points can be
detected either by pain, or by electrical measurement.
He uses electrical detection to confirm the localisations on
the ear.

Paul Nogier discovers a new reflex:
auricular cardiac reflex
(RAC=Réflexe Auriculo Cardiaque)

If an organ is in disfunction, a
mechanical stimulation of the
corresponding point on the auricle
provokes an arterial reaction.
This phenomenon has been called:
RAC, VAS, Nogiers’ arterial reflex.

VAS and Ear Charts

Because of the difficulties to observe the relationships

between the periphery and the ear, Paul Nogier has
used the VAS system to precise the organs localisations
on the auricle.
In fact, many organs in disfunction are not painful and it
is not possible to detect their corresponding point on
the ear using pain detection (feeler pressure)

VAS and Ear Charts

In the seventies Paul Nogier used some biologic

preparations of tissues and stimulated the skin with
photons or electric stimulations through the preparation
(ampulae or test rings) and using the VAS phenomenon
noticed on the auricle the points corresponding to the
tissue.
Different techniques have been used.

To research the corresponding point on the ear he
stimulates the ear with a ground pole.

between the thumb and the organic tissue preparation. This
allowed to discover three points on the ear for each tissue.

Example: the stomach has one main and two accessory

Conclusion
The history of auriculotherapy allows to understand why many
different ear charts have been published until now. It is possible to
explain the differences of the charts:
1. Confusion regarding the ear point nature: It seems that the painful
points on the ear are not the same as the electrically reacting points

2. Confusion regarding the precision of the points:

It is difficult to speak about precise points but we must speak about
probability zones to find one or several points

Conclusion

3. Confusion regarding the study of the semiology: a pain of the

foot can be explained by a gout crisis or by a sciatic nerve
compression.
4. Confusion regarding the concepts of acupuncture and
auriculotherapy: auriculotherapy is not founded on the Yin and
Yang concept.
5. Confusion regarding the topographical point localisations: The
drawings of the ear are not standardised and it is necessary to
have a standard ear model. An efficient segmentation concept is
also needed.

General Thoughts. Preamble.

! We shall be careful about our lack of knowledge. It is not
because we do not understand certain phenomena that we
shall necessarily give them a sense or an explication.
! Confronted to facts we shall admit the evidence.
! We have the right to put forward hypothesis but we do not
have the right to affirm things which were not proved.
! Auriculomedicine is a technique, which shall be proved using
experimental protocols. This technique makes therapeutical
results possible and of course, there are still shadow areas.
! Auriculomedicine shall not be presented as a medicine of
« energy ». It is a technique, which uses physiological
properties of the skin.

Auriculomedicine. Definition
! If is a sum of medical techniques with a common
point, which is the taking of the radial pulse in
order to find the phenomenon called auriculo
cardiac reflex (so called RAC).
! In auriculomedicine, diagnostic as well as
therapeutical approach are present. Whereby the
auriculotherapy is principally used on therapeutical
level.

In 1965, Paul Nogier was looking for

possibilities in order to adapt the

auriculomedicine (which was not called like this at
that moment) was a technique used to improve
auriculotherapy.

Two events were at the origin of the

RAC. What do we feel?

1. The pulse becomes stronger :
RAC+, adrenergic response.
This reaction is generally present during three
pulsations. This response is the most frequently
observed one.
2. The pulse becomes weaker, more far away:
RAC-, cholinergic response.
This reaction is generally present during three
pulsations.
3. The pulse becomes very hard, cutting:
1. This is the so called « allergic pulse » :
the hyper VAS.

Second step:
stimulation of points using light

! This is a decisive step in

auriculomedicine.
The points are stimulated
using a precise light beam.
! A RAC reaction is present,
when the point is pathologic.
! There is no RAC, in case the
point is in good health.

www.nogier.info

Third Step.
Stimulation of bigger ear areas.
Notion of an area
! « When we examine a large number of ears and
especially those of young and healthy persons, we can
be surprised by the fact that it is possible to release
a RAC reaction when we stimulate a sufficiently large
surface of the skin. Which is not the case, when a
single little part of this area is stimulated.
! « A more deeper study of this phenomenon shows
that there exist precisely limited areas, where clear
and homogeneous reactions can be observed. »

Fourth step.
Coupled stimulations.

! In this case it is about stimulating a body area

(i. e. using light) and searching for an ear point
which reacts to the identical stimulation.
! When red light is projected on the knee : the
knee point on the ear becomes reactive to the
stimulation with red light.
! This procedure is interesting for the studying of
ear somatotopies but also for the study of
excluded areas.

Fifth step.
stimulations on the body.

! This was the last step and with no doubt the most
promising one. It is possible to release vascular
reactions by stimulating only the skin surface. To
do this, « large » light spectrums are used : white
light, coloured light, infra red light, light in
frequencies.

VAS.
1993: Hypothesis of Michel Marignan
! « The significant form of the wave was identified by the help
of numeric signals. This modification of the wave happens
with no change of the rhythm and can be present during 8 to
15 cycles of the cardiac evolution. It begins at the period of
1 to 3 cycles after the cardiac evolution. Here, we put
forward the hypothesis that it is a modification of the
oscillation mode of the artery, which becomes a less mode
amortised, before the impulse attack of the systole. We
physically explain this stiffening by the brutal modification
of the rigidity of the artery wall, and we know that this one
is under the dependance of the neuro-vegetative system.
There exist a concordance of about 95% between the
stimulation signal and the presence of the characteristic

VAS.
1993: Hypothesis of Michel Marignan

! « The VAS phenomenon, a reaction of the neuro-

vegetative expression non specific in itself, seems
to us to be an expression of the immediate
activation of « sondage »mechanisms of and of
research of neuronal resonance in order to
elaborate a coherent response for the system,
which can happen via inhibition or facilitation. »

! 1982: Dr. Raphaël NOGIER, Dr.Yves MENEZO and
Dr.Roger SANTINI practise a series of experiments (at
INSA) using « blind » rabbits, resulting in three
conclusions:
1. White light pulsed at 9 Hz on the fur of a rabbit creates
an increase of circulating catecholamines (while
continuous white light creates a decrease of blood
catecholamines in this rabbit).
2. Pulsed white light increases significantly glycemia.
3. Continuous white light leads to an increase of the
acetylcholinesterase level, compared to the rabbits
treated with discontinuous light.

Electromagnetic waves
• Electromagnetic waves carry energy. They transit in vacuum
at light speed. When they meet an obstacle a part of energy
is reflected, while an other part is is absorbed and
transformed. For example, the sun light is partially reflected
by clothes, which allows us to perceive their colour. The
absorbed part of the sun energy we perceive as warmth.
Energy increases regarding to frequency, leading to even
getting dangerous. In this way the radio waves can pass
through the human body without causing any danger to
health. On the other hand the x-rays at high dosage can
burn up cells. In this case we talk about ionising rays.

Light - what is it?

• Light is the sum of

electromagnetic waves
visible to the eye.
• We can see light in the
range from 380 to 780
nano-metres wave

• Light is a phenomenon deriving from different light sources

like luminous devices, stars, flames captured by light
receptors, like the eye, a photograph panel, a video camera,
a CCD panel.
A light source transforms the energy it is using (electric,
chemical, thermic energy) to luminous energy.

Light carries this energy up to the receptor.

A receptor is a system, which transforms the received
luminous energy in an other kind of energy (electric, chemical,
thermic energy).

For example, an electric lamp transforms a part of the

received electric energy to luminous energy.
A photonic-battery transforms a part of received energy
in electrical energy.
The eye transforms the received energy in nerve influx.

Photogram in practise

1. It is necessary to
project coloured light
onto the skin (the skin
surface shall be large).

1. It is necessary to wait
for 10 pulsations
before changing the
filter.

Copyright: Raphaël Nogier

www.nogier.info

What is the physiological response?

! In normal situation, every colour shall release a

VAS reaction.

! After a filter is changed there is no VAS during 2

pulsations.

! After these two pulsations the pulse becomes

stronger for two or three pulsations.

! At least the pulse becomes normal again.

Copyright: Raphaël Nogier
92
Raphaël Nogier. Advanced seminar in Auriculotherapy

www.nogier.info

What is the physiological response?

! In case the pulse collapses and the VAS shows an

cholinergic expression, we can say that a photo
perception gap is present.

! It is possible to find several photo perception gaps

in one patient, example : red 25, green 58,etc…

How to treat a gap of cutaneous

photo perception?

1. The patient shall be

illuminated with the
« pathological » colour
2. Detection of points that
release VAS using a stick
with black ending.
3. Find the points using
electrical detection.
4. Needle with ASP

Frequencies in pathology
! The discovery of the frequencies allowed to make
the definition of frequency pathologies. In fact,
certain diseases are accompanied by a photo
perception disorder regarding frequencies. This
disorder can be present locally or on a general
scale.

in the painful area and by doing so define the so
called « electromagnetic signature  » of the lesion.

Human being:
" Notion and consciousness of itself.

The human being is right-handed from

his birth

" 90% of babies turn their head to the right side in

their bed, does not matter if they lay on their
back or on their chest.

" 90% of children write with the right hand. 90% of

adults turn on the right side when walking up
stairs.

Laterality in medicine
" Broca, XIXth century:
– The left hemisphere is the seat of the linguistic
ability. Aphasia is in 99% of the cases the result
of hemiplegia of the right hemisphere.
" Pavlov, XIXth century siècle:

right and the left cerebral hemispheres.

How does our world perception happen?

1. All information is gathered by the right

All animals develop symmetry

Copyright: Raphaël Nogier

Why is there symmetry ?

" The only way for a living organism to displace is to
