How to find the linear equation between two points using the

TI:83/84 graphing calculator

Step 1: Reset the calculator

(2nd + 7 1 2)
Step 2: STAT (2nd row 3 button over)
Step 3: Edit, enter
Step 4: L1 - x values
L2 - y values
Step 5: STAT, (over to arrow) Calc, press the number 4 (linreg (ax+b))
Step 6: press enter or arrow down and highlight calculate and press enter

y = ax + b When using the calculator a is the slope and b is the y-intercept

Substitute (plug in) each number the calculator gives you into the correct place in the
equation.

Example:
Find the equation between (3, 4) and (1, -2)
1. Reset the calculator
2. Press STAT, Edit (enter)
3. Enter the x values into L1. X-values in this example are 3 and 1.
4. Enter the y values into L2. Y-values in this example are 4 and -2.
5. Press STAT, (over arrow) Calc, press the number 4, and then press enter
a. If you are a students with TI:84 Plus you need to press the down arrow until
CALCULATE is highlighted. Press enter
6. y = ax + b a is the slope and b is the y-intercept
a = 3
b = -5
7. Write the linear equation: y = 3x - 5
