Vaporization Summary
What are we going to learn in next lecture?

3
At the end of this lecture
students should be able
to describe the flash vaporization test.
to determine the physical properties of reservoir
fluid from PVT test.

4
PVT Tests
To provide data for surface facility design and
reservoir engineering and well flow calculations.

Over recent years reservoir simulation capability has

generated the need to extend compositional
description from C7+ to in some cases C29+.

PVT report provides source of all reservoir

engineering properties for behavior over
exploration, development and production.

5
Equipment for PVT Analysis
Apparatus for:

transfer and recombination of separator oil and gas
samples.

measuring gas and liquid volumes.

performing separator test.
PVT cell and displacing pumps.
High pressure viscometer.
Gas chromatograph or equivalent.

8
Flash Vaporization Test
Also called as flash liberation, PV relations, constant
composition expansion or flash expansion.
Determination of the correlation between pressure and
volume at reservoir temperature.
The system never changes during the test.

The gas remains in equilibrium with the oil through out the test.
Main objectives are to determine:

the bubble point pressure corresponding to the reservoir
temperature.

formation volume factor above bubble point (together with
information from separator tests).

9
Flash Vaporization Test
Procedure
No reservoir gas or liquid is removed from the cell.
At each step, PV of reservoir fluid is measured.

10
Flash Vaporization Test
Procedure
A sample of the reservoir liquid is placed in a laboratory cell.
Pressure is adjusted to a value equal to or greater than
initial reservoir pressure.
Temperature is set at reservoir temperature.
Pressure is reduced by increasing the volume in increments.
The cell is agitated regularly to ensure that the contents are
at equilibrium.
No reservoir gas or liquid is removed from the cell.
At each step, pressure and volume of the reservoir are measured.
The volume is termed total volume, Vt, since at pressures below
the bubble point the volume includes both gas and liquid.
11
Flash Vaporization Test
By plotting P versus V, a break in the slope is
obtained at the bubble point pressure.
