With the fast development of LTE, traditional macro base stations cannot meet LTE's full
coverage and seamless transition requirements. Therefore, micro base stations and indoor
distributed base stations are gradually becoming the mainstream trend.
The fiber to the mobile base station (FTTM) solution carries base transceiver station (BTS)-
access services through passive optical network (PON), and uses leverage optical distribution
network (ODN) resources and ONU series devices to fast deploy access services on the micro
base stations and indoor distributed base stations, dramatically saves customers' investments.

Network Architecture and
Typical Networking
Typical Networking
In an FTTM network, the ONU accesses the macro base stations or indoor distributed base
stations through the E1 or Ethernet port and uses PON to uniformly carry mobile access
network, meeting high bandwidth and high-density BTS requirements.
As the last mile that connects users to the Internet, small-cell backhaul makes fully use of
leverage access resources and outdoor ONUs to provide backhaul services for distributed
small cell bases. It uses a simple and mature service configuration scheme, featuring a high
transmission efficiency in addition to ensuring the QoS. Also, it simplifies sites to lower the site
installation and maintenance costs.

The ONU connects to the 2G/3G/LTE BTS through the E1 or Ethernet port and is
upstream to the PON or 10G PON service boards of the OLT. Then, the OLT restores E1
or Ethernet signals, processes these signals, and upstream transmits them to the upper-
layer network.

02
High Bandwidth

Challenge
The video service rapidly develops and an increasing number of users are using mobile phones
to watch videos. On this basis, 4K video has become the basic service, soaring bandwidth
demands.

Huawei Solution
In an FTTM network, MA5800, the industry's first OLT with distributed architecture is deployed.
It provides high bandwidth, lowers delay, and provides best video service experience.

03
Flexible Deployment

Challenge
Small cell installation is flexible, with poles, walls, ceilings, and embedded sites feasible,
bringing great challenges for backhaul network, site acquisition, power feeding, and
maintenance.
Small cells are deployed in hot spots where existing macro cell backhaul networks cannot
reach. Moreover, traditional ring backhaul networks are difficult to expand.

Step Operation Procedure

The network designer designs the network and issues configurations to the NMS.
0 The configurations include no-authentication policy, ONU configuration file, and
OLT configuration file.

1 The engineer installs the small cell and ONU onsite. Then, installs GPON optical
fibers to the ONU and powers on the ONU.

The OLT notifies the NMS of the online ONU. The NMS finds out the no-
2 authentication policy of the ONU and matches the policy, and then automatically
issues configurations to the OLT.

3 The OLT issues commands to the ONU and activates the ONU.

About 5-10 minutes, the engineer confirms that the small cell functions properly
4 and copies ONU SN and site position to the work table. Till now, the installation
completes.

05
High Accuracy Clock

Challenge
On a communications network, the wireless application has the most rigorous requirements on
the clock frequency. The frequencies of different base stations must be synchronized within a
specified precision. Otherwise, re-sync occurs during the base station switching.

Huawei Solution
FTTM supports 1588v2 clock, external BITS clock, and synchronous Ethernet clock.

3. 1588v2
4. 1PPS+ToD

1588v2 features high clock precision, which achieves clock synchronization, and time
synchronization at the precision of 100 ns, fully meeting 3G and 4G LTE BTS frequency
synchronization and phase synchronization (that is, clock synchronization and time
synchronization) requirements.
Synchronous Ethernet clock implements clock frequency of 50 ppb.

06
E2E Protection

Challenge
LTE has high requirements on reliability for a backhaul network.
Reliability of a backhaul network should be at least 99.99%, that is, it must run normally in
99.99% of the time.
Duration of a fault must be within 500 ms to 2s
Interruption duration of real-time services (such as voice and video services) must be within
50 ms to 250 ms
.
Huawei Solution
An FTTM network must be fully protected for high reliability of LTE services so that service
interruption duration when a fault occurs can be shortened.

Type B/Type C
protection

1 Optical fibers from the OLT to ONU need to be especially protected for
complicated cable branching and routing, and harsh environments. Type B and
type C protection used improve ODN reliability and ensure continuous service
running.

2 Uplink disconnection of the OLT brings great impacts. RRPP and ERPS are used
to protect links over an Ethernet ring, improving network reliability.

3 LAG and VRRP are used to protect links between the OLT and upstream devices,
enhancing system reliability.

07
Y.1731 Visible Quality
Performance Monitoring
Challenge
As popularization of video services over mobiles, carriers have difficulties in Ethernet OAM.
Video streams are very sensitive to packet loss and delay. Loss of a packet may lead to lose of
dozens of picture frames, resulting in picture freeze and poor user experience. In this case,
prevention of network quality deterioration (causing user complaints) and fast network fault
locating become imperative issues for carriers.

Huawei Solution
Y.1731 defines a series of methods that can be used to detect the Ethernet link performance so
that carriers can obtain the link performance data in real time and fast diagnose network
performance issues. In this way, user experience on video services over mobiles can be
improved and SLA report for carriers can be output.
