Northeast Indias largest Information Technology (IT) hub has been inaugurated in Tripuras capital city

RANKINGS & REPORTS

As per figures revealed by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India has
become worlds fifth largest military spender in year 2016. Indias military expenditure for 2016 was $55.9
billion, which marks 8.5% growth over 2015 figure. US retained its position as largest military spender in the
world.
India ranks 136th among 180 countries in the 2017 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Sans
Frontires (RSF) also known as Reporters Without Borders. In 2016 India ranked 133rd on this index.
Norway ranked first on the index. It replaced Finland which was holding the top spot since past six years.
Mumbai and Chennai have ranked among the top 20 tourist destinations in Asia Pacific Region as per
the Mastercard Asia Pacific Destinations Index 2017.
In terms of total expenditure by international tourists, Singapore hosted the highest spending visitors at $254
per day. For the entire APAC region, overall tourism expenditure stood at $244.9 billion

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has planned to build a new oil terminal at Motihari in Bihar to Nepal from
the planned pipeline up to Amlekganj in Nepal.
The 69-km Motihari-Amlekganj pipeline will be built at a cost of Rs.325 crore.

ISRO has launched a solar calculator app that can calculate the benefits of installing solar panels in different
regions of the country. This app has been created by the Space Application Center (SAC). At present this app
can be downloaded from New and Renewable Energy section at sac.gov.in.
India has successfully test-fired 3000 kilometre range Agni-III ballistic missile. It has launched from Abdul
Kalam Island off Odisha coast. It can carry a warhead of 1.5 tonne which is protected by carbon all composite

DEFENCE

On April 28, 2017, Indian Coast Guard ship, ICGS Varad, the eight in the Vikram-class offshore patrol vessel,
was decommissioned at Chennai Port. ICGS Varad was in service for 27 years.
Indian Air Force introduced its frontline Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft into the 221 Squadron, Valiants, at its
base in Punjab to enhancing the IAFs capabilities. Su-30 MKI is a state-of-the-art all-weather multi-role
fighter jet.
A "joint doctrine" envisaging deeper operational synergies among the army, navy and air force was unveiled
on April 25, 2017. The three defence services will now follow a unified approach to deal with all possible
security challenges including conventional and proxy wars.
The Indian Navy began a joint maritime exercise Varuna with the French Navy at the Mediterranean Sea. The
exercise was begun on 24th April 2017 and will be ended on 30th April 2017. It aims at deepening combat
coordination between the two navies.

Scientists have unearthed five ancient dinosaur egg fossils in China dating back to 70 million years.
NASA scientists have discovered a new planet- OGLE-2016-BLG-1195lb- that has the same mass as Earth
and orbits its star from the same distance as Earth orbits the sun. The newly discovered planet is nearly 13,000
light-years away and orbits a small star.
