1. Course Description & Objective


Taxation is an essential element of every revenue generating individual and business house.
The success of an enterprise also depends on proper tax planning methods followed. This
requires practical understanding of the tax laws namely the Income Tax Act’ 1961. The basic
objective of this course is to generate the understanding of Income Tax Act’ 1961. Also this
course should enable the students to undertake their own tax planning and prepare for
computation of the Taxable Income.

2. Prerequisites
This course is designed for students undertaking the PGDM program who have never
completed a course in Taxation. There are no prerequisites for this course.

3. Course Content
• Basic concepts in Taxation
• Residential status and its effects on Tax incidents.
• Income under the head “Salaries” and its computation
• Income under the head “Income from House Property” and its computation.
• Income under the head “Profits and Gains of Business or Profession” and its
computation.
• Income under the head “Capital Gain” and its computation.
• Income under the head “Income from Other Sources” and its computation.
• Implications towards implementation of New Direct Tax Code.

4. Instructional Materials
The reading of some parts of the book is compulsory. As additional bibliography, the given
book has been recommended for further study and reference:

5. Conduct of Course
This course will be conducted in a lecture, Presentations and problem solving approach. The
professor discusses the laws, underlining principles and the application of those laws and
principles to the practical applications of real life taxation.

6. Evaluation method

The grading of each individual will take account of the quality of classroom participation and
the standard of written analysis.

Elements in grading of the students’ performance in the course will be based on the
following criteria:

8. Examinations & Quizzes

Examinations and quizzes will test your understanding and application of the topics covered
as well as individual readings and problems solved. Not all the assignments will be collected
for grading.

9. Participation

Much of our success in this course is dependent upon an active learning climate in the
classroom. You should be willing to give your opinions, question the concepts presented,
and present your analysis of the problems and cases we will cover in class. You will also be
asked to participate in work groups in class presentations. Class participation will also be
affected by your involvement in your groups. Attendance in class is necessary, but not
sufficient condition for good participation.

10. Additional Information

• There will be no make-up examinations. Students who have a valid reason for missing
a scheduled examination should contact the professor prior to the date of the
examination to make arrangements to take the exam before the scheduled date.
Failure to comply with the above will result in a grade of zero for the missed exam.
• Due dates for all assigned problems will be informed well in advance. Assignments will
be collected at the beginning of class on the due dates indicated. No late work will be
accepted in any case.
• Students are expected to sit in the class room at least five minutes before the
commencement of the class. No student is allowed to enter the class room once the
professor enters the class room as it disturbs the entire class.
• All beepers and cell phones must be turned off during class.

This is only Tentative Course Outline. The professor reserves the right to modify the
schedule, if deemed necessary. Any changes to the course-outline will be announced in
advance.
