Airport infrastructure works are a core part of our business and our teams are
experienced in providing the engineering skills and technologies necessary to
deliver both airside and groundside support facilities.
Working closely with airport operators, owners and carriers - as well as with the
general public we understand the need for maximum safety and security within
live environments. Utilising our own batching plants and pavers to lay both asphalt
or Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), we work within tight time frames, minimising
lead times to reduce the impact of our works on customers and end users.
In every project location we utilise the expertise of our dedicated and long
established supply chain, working together to develop optimum solutions that
provide best value and exceed customer expectations.
Our projects are delivered through a variety of procurement routes including

ten years we have completed over 40 airfield projects worldwide - including the
development of new runways and taxiways, the improvement and upgrade of
existing infrastructure and the provision of a range of support facilities.

Lagan Construction is involved in the design and

Due to the difficult terrain, construction of the
access tracks and foundations presented a number
of challenges including varied depths of peat and
vast inclusions of schist rock. The project design also
required specific environment mitigation measures to
be adopted to protect the environment and nearby
sensitive wildlife habitats.
As principal contractor, we are managing and co-
ordinating all site activities including turbine delivery
and erection, electrical contracts and overhead line
work. The project is on target for completion in late
2011 and has already set new health, safety and
environmental standards for the industry.
PROJECT: WOOD PELLET PRODUCTION
FACILITY AND BIOMASS PLANT
Lagan Construction is to deliver an innovative civil
engineering and building package for a new wood
pellet and biomass power plant at Girvan in Scotland
in an industry first for low carbon energy specialist
Land Energy.
The multi-million pound project will include the
construction of an onsite biomass combined heat and
power (CHP) plant to supply process heat and
electricity to the new wood pellet factory. In a UK first,
wood pelleting and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power
turbine technologies are being brought together.
Once completed, the new facility will generate
enough wood pellets to provide sufficient heat energy
for up to 15,000 homes. The timber used in the
production process will be supplied locally from
Scottish commercial forestry, ensuring the
sustainability of this source of renewable energy.
We are undertaking all the civil, structural and
building works required to adapt the site including
the conversion of three existing buildings which are
being re-used as part of the new processing plant.
Work will be delivered in two phases beginning in
July 2011 with completion due in March 2012.

PROJECT: LIMERICK TUNNEL PPP
We were a member of the DirectRoute consortium
which successfully delivered the 400 million
Limerick Tunnel PPP project, part of a larger
scheme to construct the final link in the citys ring
road and integral to one of Irelands strategic
national primary routes.
The contract for National Roads Authority (NRA)
was undertaken on the basis of a design, build,
finance and operate agreement over 35 years.
A key aspect was the construction of a 675m long
tube tunnel running beneath the River Shannon.
Five precast segments were constructed then
floated out, immersed into a dredged underwater
channel and joined together to form the tunnel.
In addition, 10km of new dual carriageway, five river
crossings, four major interchanges, 17 structures
and two toll plazas along with associated utilities
and connecting roads were constructed.

PROJECT: WARRENPOINT
RO-RO FERRY TERMINAL
Situated at the western end of Carlingford Lough in
County Down, Northern Ireland, Warrenpoint
Harbour is a busy sea port open to marine traffic
from all over the world. The 4.3 million project to
install a new ro-ro ferry terminal had to be completed
during a planned shut down over the festive period.
There were seven berths including a roll-on roll-off
berth which required upgrading for use by larger
vessels. We were commissioned to design and
construct a new floating pontoon and two new
linkspan bridges, two berthing dolphins (including
walkways, fendering and mooring points) and
reclamation works.
The works had to be co-ordinated with port activity
including the berthing and mooring requirements of
vessels and tugs and onshore traffic movements,
with tidal conditions dictating the time slots available.
Specific health and safety methods and working
systems were developed to prevent falls into the
water or onto vessels below.
The project was delivered successfully without
incident or accident thanks to our rigorous safety
training and procedures.

 PROJECT: PORT OF TYNE, NEWCASTLE
FK Lowry Piling is at the vanguard of change to

The client was specific in the programming of the
works as the priority was the installation of the piles
for the ring beam supporting the portal frame. Upon
completion of this element of the project all three
rigs commenced installation of the slab piles inside
the ring beam.
With each rig installing over 500 linear metres of
piles per day, the logistics of delivery (80% from FK
Lowrys plant at Lisburn and 20% cast in Oldham)
were key to the success of the project.

PROJECT: BLACKFRIARS ROAD, LONDON
FK Lowry Piling delivered its first foundation
project in central London at Blackfriars Road in
the heart of the City.
The 600,000 high profile scheme for McAleer &
Rushe involved the construction of a 5m high secant
piled retaining wall to form a single storey basement
for a new hotel development.
Some 350 CFA bored secant wall piles and a further
1 41 CFA bored bearing piles, 600mm in diameter,
were driven to depths of up to 23m into London Clay
to create the 4m high retaining wall. The bearing
piles were designed to carry loads of up to 1 600kn
each and were installed to lengths up to 25.5m.
Due to the city centre location, FKL put in place a
sensitive and restrictive traffic management plan to
co-ordinate plant and material deliveries. The site is
also bound on three sides by existing office and
residential buildings and a double storey basement
is situated within meters on one elevation. Vibration
monitoring was therefore carried out throughout the
contract to minimise disruption to neighbours and a
static load test undertaken along with integrity
testing on the bearing piles.
FKL also built the temporary guide wall and was
responsible for the full pile design on the project.
The works were delivered in ten weeks.
