Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
I participated in a PAD screening event where people came to be screened and assessed by a
vascular doctor for free. I helped use dopplers to find the pulses of participants, and I calculated
the pressures and elasticity of their blood vessels to come up with PAD scores to be looked
through by an MD. I also helped clean beds and direct participants to the stations they were
going to during the clinic.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
This experience taught me how to calculate the pressures and elasticity of blood vessels to assess
PAD. It was also valuable because it gave me a greater appreciation for preemptive screening for
disease in the community. This experience was also beneficial to me because a number of nurses
from a wide variety of critical care backgrounds volunteered for this event. I was able to talk to
them about their experiences, and they imparted a lot of wisdom on me ranging from patient care
to politics as a nurse.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I would recommend this experience for the future because of how simple and easy the
experience was. It was also very informative, and it was a great way to represent the college of
nursing in the community.
