using cardinal directions.

NCSS: People places and environment

IAS: 1.3.1 Identify the cardinal directions (north, south, east and west) on
maps and globes. Cardinal directions: north, south, east and west

ISTE: (May/May not be applicable)

II. Materials & Management:

computer side, and east is word wall side)
v. Pencil
vi. Crayons
vii. Hot wheel car
viii. Video
ix. Notecards
B. Time:
i. 30-45 Minutes
C. Space:
i. Different areas around classroom
ii. Desks
D. Behavior:
i. Point out positive behaviors
1. Kayliana is sitting nicely doing what I asked
2. Only 50% of the class is doing what I asked- oh now 100%
3. If you all are really goo listeners and do what is asked me
and mr. carter will let you have extra free time today or
etc.
ii. Magnet behavior chart

E. Technology:

i. Computer
ii. Doc cam

III. Anticipatory SetHave students gather on the carpet I would like all of you to come
to the carpet and get in a circle around this (Point). When I started coming to riverview I did
not know how to get here. So I asked one of my friends who I come with if she could drive me.
Along the way I paid attention to how to get here. If a new student started in this room and
needed to know how to get to the bathroom how would you tell them? Wait for student
responses Even though you told the new student how to get to the bathroom, your directions
might be hard to understand so we need to give them more of a description and we can do this
through directions.

IV. Purpose: Today we will be learning about 4 new ways to get somewhere.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION

V. Adaptation: (ACEI 3.2)

A. Remediation

Alexis would prefer to write then draw and color on her foldable

Isham and Arcieyla can not read or write very well so they can draw

Ayden does not like writing so he can draw

VI. Lesson Presentation: (ACEI 2.4) (ACEI 3.3)

b. Have a felt map with streets, buildings, a picture of the compass rose, signs
with north, south, east, and west. This is a map. What do you notice on the
map. Give them time to respond with a few answers. Then tell them a few
things you notice. Point at compass rose if they do not say that. Did any of you
notice this (point) right here?
c. Do any of you know what it is? This is a compass rose. Do you see these letters,
do you know what they stand for? Give them a second to respond. One is north,
do any of you know what the other ones are? Give them a second---South, east,
and west. Set the n,s,e,w note cards around the map. These are called cardinal
directions say that with me Cardinal directions.
d. There are some different ways to remember north, south, east, and west but the
best way is that the W and the E spell we. Also think what way you read- you
read left to right (point at w and e) and N comes before S in the alphabet.
e. We kind of talked about this earlier but If I was on wildcat lane (point) and I
wanted to get to the house. What would you tell me to do? Good so these
cardinal directions north, south, east, and west is another way of telling
someone where to go. So instead of kayliana telling me to turn left to get the
house she would say turn south.
f. I want all of you to look at where you are sitting are you sitting toward the
north, south, east, or west. For example I am sitting facing the north. Now I
want all of you to move 5 spaces to your right and sit down. Now look at where
you are now. We may move but the directions all stay the same. I was facing
north but now I am facing east. Can anyone tell me where they were and now
where they are?
g. Now I want all of you to stand up. I have a song I would like to show you.
However it has no dance moves. So your job is to listen to what they are saying
and come up with dance moves that go along with the song. However, I know a
few of you do not like to dance so if you do not want to you dont have to you
can just watch the video.
h. Have the direction signs already placed around the room. I am going to give
each of you a piece of paper and I would like all of you to go back to your seats
quietly please and get out your pencils and crayons.

Checking Understanding-

a. Watch their facial expressions throughout the lesson

b. See if we move spaces if they can tell where they are cuurently
c. See what they draw/ write for their foldable
d. If have time do Ispy game or
e. Ask the students questions
f. What is something on the south wall?
g. What is on the north wall?
h. Where is mr. carters desk?

Closure

i. Have them already made for the students. If you hold all these flaps closed like this
you will see something called a compass rose. Say that with me- compass rose. First, I
need all of you to write your name at the top of this paper. (Pause)I left 4 blanks on
this for you to write the N,S,E,W. (Show mine on the doc cam) Find the n flap and
write NORTH, Find the S flap and write south.. now go back to the N/ north flap and
open it I want you to draw, write, or both something that is on the north wall. On
mine I drew the------ We are going to do this for each cardinal direction.
j. While they are working go around and ask them what they are going to draw for
certain walls then after ask the students as a class the following:
a. What is something on the south wall?
b. What is on the north wall?
c. Where is mr. carters desk?

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT (ACEI 4.0)
