Breath marks have purposely been avoided and should be in- serted by the instructor to fit the ability of the individual stu- dent. However, great stress should be made on the gradual extension of breath marks as the student progresses through the book, as the general musical effect will be enhanced by the way the student phrases the music. Studies 1 through 16 may also be used to develop facility in reading and playing inalla breve tempo.
