Time Allowance: 120 minutes (2 hours)


It is recommended that you use at least 10-15 minutes writing a clear
and detailed plan and the remaining writing. (Remember this is worth 5
marks)

Assessment:

You are to write an Analytical Text Response essay, answering ONE of the
following questions.

Of Mice and Men

I am Sam and The Black Balloon (you must address both texts)

Nona and Me

The Messenger

Introductions: (COST)
Text Details: Tell me the title and author, and the year of publication.

Context: Briefly introduce me to when/where the text is set and how this influences the text. (Try couple
your context into your text details, as it will flow better)

Stance: Your position your answer to the question.

Overview: Let me know what the general ideas are that you will discuss.

Recommended Analytical writing structure: TEEAL

Topic Sentence: You must have a clear topic sentence that answers the question, and tells me what
your argument is.

Elaboration: You may have a complex idea that should be expressed in finer detail. You might need to
make a distinction between terms and clarify what you really mean so that I dont have any desperate
questions for you.

Evidence: You will need to include a combination of direct evidence (quotes) and indirect evidence
(examples, reference to contexts, structures, pictures, etc).

Analysis: This is where you tell me how the intimate details of the evidence you have selected
influence the text, and the idea you are presenting. It is not always as simple as this quote means
that Your analysis is where you show me that you are producing an argument using evidence, and
you are using your own voice to strengthen your literary interpretation.

Note that often your analysis and evidence will be coupled together. This is common in high
scoring responses, especially when you are EMBEDDING quotes.

Link: Never end your paragraph without making sure that you have very clearly connected your idea
back to the overall essay question.

Conclusions: (GOD)

Generalisation: Give a simple strong answer to the question. Short and Sharp.

Overview: You might briefly go over each of the ideas you have spoken

Definitive Statement: Try to come up with a cleverly worded final statement that answers your
question in an interesting and insightful sentence. Make the last thing I read wow me.
