1. To what extent were learning outcomes appropriate and achievable to your students?
Students were able to meet all of the learning outcomes accurately. I do think some
students found the writing a bit more challenging than others, but they still did an
exceptional job.
2. How effective were your instructional strategies? What changes would you make in
your instructional approaches if you taught this lesson again? Why?
I decided to use a read aloud to do this lesson and I do not think I would change that.
Read alouds are a great way to keep the students engaged in the lesson.
3. Evaluate the effectiveness of your oral and written communication with students.
(Consider how well you communicated learning objectives, clarity of directions, use of standard English, quality of
questions and effectiveness of discussion techniques.)
For the most part I think my language and communication was pretty effective.
However, some students did not include all parts of the writing that I had asked for. I
do not think my directions were as clear and explicit as they could have been in that
portion of the lesson.
4. Evaluate the level of student engagement in your lesson . (Consider how you presented the
content/skills, the activities and assignments for students, grouping of students, and structure and pacing of the
lesson.)
Students seemed to be engaged throughout the entire read aloud. When they had
opportunities to turn and talk I noticed a few not engaging with their partners, but that
was only a few out of the entire class.
5. How effectively did you use instructional materials, resources, and/or technology?
I think I utilized all of my resources efficiently. I used the TV camera to show the book
on a bigger screen; the additional resources in the back of the book (which includes a
website that I went to on the internet), and all of the students had the appropriate
supplies to write a paragraph and draw/color their pictures.
6. To what extent were your assessment strategies effective? What changes would you
make in your assessment approach if you taught this lesson again? Why?
I think my assessment did its job, but I wish I couldve given the students more time to
make their writing pieces more elaborate. I think I would also write down everything I
was looking for in their writing next time instead of just stating it.
7. To what extent was your feedback to students accurate, substantive, constructive,
specific, and/or timely?
Majority of my feedback came right after reading the book. I think it was accurate and
timely. Most of got the idea of what challenges were throughout the book; therefore my
feedback was mostly positive agreement.
8. To what extent did the classroom management and environment contribute to student
learning? (Consider your classroom procedures, your use of physical space, and the students conduct.)
I feel that I can always work on classroom management. Through this lesson I think I
did a fairly well job. Students were sitting in the appropriate area for the read aloud;
they were seated on the carpet in front of the TV so they could see the book well. This
also gave them a convenient opportunity to find a partner quickly when doing
discussion. To regain students attention I used multiple different techniques that the
students use with their own teacher. One in particular is when I say, Can you give me
your hands and eyes? The students respond with Hands and eyes, while they put
their hands in their laps and their eyes up at me.
9. Did you make modifications to your lesson plan during the lesson? If so, what were
they and what motivated these changes?
I did not do the picture walk before reading the book. I decided that this was
unnecessary because I was not focusing on the students predictions of what may
happen in the book. Also I did not allow students to share their writing pieces with the
class. This is mostly because their writing took longer than expected and I wanted to
still have time to do my extension.
10. Was your Teaching Behavior Focus goal met?
Considering I did both turn and talk and students writing about personal
experiences, I think I met my goal. Also student engagement was present through the
whole lesson.
