LESSON PLAN: CULTURAL DIVERSE PRESENTION BROUGHT TO YOU BY MRS.

GUTIERREZ
STUDENTS

An appreciative
introduction to a diverse
classroom

-Students will be able to Learn about specific cultural groups

-Students will be able to develop a positive attitude toward our personal culture.

-Students will be able to discover the contributions of people from different ethnic groups.

-Students will be able to learn about diverse cultures of other students. (Understanding level)

-Students will be able to plan a speech about their culture. (Application level)

Visual-Viewing different cultural artifacts

Auditory-Reading aloud in classroom/listening to others read

Kinesthetic-Preparing and sharing speech with classmates and sharing artifact with their
classmates.

- Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence: Ability to give a short speech and share cultural artifact with
classmates.
-Verbal-linguistic Intelligence- Ability to give speech and relay information to classmates on
their culture.

-Spatial intelligence-Ability to use artifact to relate information to classmates.

-Book: Little Blue and Little Yellow written by Leo Lionni

-Homework assignment: list of questions to be answered by student

-An item that represents the students culture can be an artifact or a food item.

Teacher Procedures:

Teacher must introduce their own culture. Excite the students! Bring an artifact to school
that can represent your own culture and explain to the students how culture can relate to
diversity.
Teacher must teach students what diversity is: Read quote from the book Multicultural
education for children and adolescents, Diversity is peoples values, religion, language,
ideals, artistic expression, patterns of social and interpersonal relationships, and ways of
perceiving, behaving, and thinking.(page 25)
Teacher will call on students to help read the book Little Blue and Little Yellow aloud.
Teacher will explain the terms Diversity and Culture so that students have a better
understanding of what the words mean.
Teacher will prepare the students with speech questions that students must answer for
speech assignment that will occur.
Teacher will answer any questions students have about diversity or culture and the
project that will be due at the requested time.
Teacher will view the speech and artifacts that the student brings in to class
Teacher will encourage and support students in their cultural sharing.
After all students share their artifact and background with students, teacher will end with
a small encouragement of self-acceptance.

Student Procedures

Students will be involved in the reading of Little Blue and Little Yellow Book.
Students will be called on randomly to read pieces of the book.
Students will take notes on what Diversity and Culture mean.
Students will take home speech question assignment sheet and begin working on the
questions provided by the teacher.
Students will find an artifact that represents their culture.
Students are expected to give a speech in front of classmates that answer questions about
their culture.
Student will share their artifact with class members and talk a little bit about the back
ground of the item they brought and how it represents their culture.
Students are expected to listen to other students as they share their cultures.

At the end of the speeches the teacher should have a prepared closing speech.

Teacher must as students what the following quotes mean to them and then elaborate on the
following quotes from the book Multicultural Education for Children and Adolescents:

1. We define culture as peoples values, language, religion, ideals, and artistic expressions,
patterns of social and interpersonal relationships, and ways of perceiving, behaving, and
thinking. (pg.25)

-Explain what self-acceptance is and why it is important. (Ask questions to students about
what self-acceptance is?)

-Promote positive cultural identity. (Ask questions to students about what this means then
elaborate).
Grading Rubric for Cultural Speech Assignment

The following is how I will be basing the students completion of


the assignment. The lesson should be based off students overall
preparation of speech with detailed focus on their own culture.
Student participation in the activity will be graded based off
student participation and ability to gain information about
different cultures.

Assignment contains detailed answers that 10 pts


correspond to questions
Artifact reflects students cultural background 10 pts
Student speech was detailed, clear and organized 10 pts
Student speech contained background 10 pts
information that was detailed and gave insight to
artifact and cultural background
Student participation in activity and reading 10 pts
