COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST ON CONCRETE CYLINDERS

Date Tested : 29 -04-2010

Tested By : II. Class of Civil Engineering
Project Name : CE206-Building Materials Lab Project -2(Testing of Hardened Concrete)
Reporter : Ali Haydar TA

AIM

To determine the compressive strength of concrete cylinders.

APPARATUS

Compression testing machine, cylinder mould of 15cm diameter and 30cm height,

STANDARD REFERENCE:
TS 500:Requirements for design and construction of reinforced concrete structures
TS EN 12390-3:Testing hardened concrete-Part3:Compressive strength of test
specimens

PROCEDURE

1. Cast the cylinder and cure for 28 days.

2. Takeout the specimen from the curing tank.
3. Wipe out the excess water from the surface of specimen.
4. Place the specimen vertically on the platform of compression testing machine.
5. Apply the load continuously and uniformly without shock at the rate of 315 kN/min.
And continue the loading until the specimen fails.
6. Record the maximum load taken.
NOTE

A minimum of 3 specimens should be tested, but we tested 1 specimens

CURING

The test specimens are stored in moist air for 24hours and after this period the specimens are
marked and removed from the molds and kept submerged in clear fresh water until taken out
prior to test.

The water for curing should be tested every 7days and the temperature of water must be at
24 +/- 2C.

CALCULATIONS

Compressive strength() = (Maximum Load / Cross sectional area of the specimen)

d:Diameter of specimen cylinders.

Cross sectional area of the specimen =

d=15cm=0,15m

Maximum load =708,9kN=708,9x103N

,
= = = ,
,

RESULT

Compressive strength of cylinder =40,12MPa=40,12N/mm2

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE CUBES
Date Tested : 29 -04-2010
Tested By : II. Class of Civil Engineering
Project Name : CE206-Building Materials Lab Project -2(Testing of Hardened Concrete)
Reporter : Ali Haydar TA

AIM

To determine the compressive strength of concrete specimens prepared.

APPARATUS

Compression testing machine, cube mould of 15cm size

STANDARD REFERENCE:
TS 500:Requirements for design and construction of reinforced concrete structures
TS EN 12390-3:Testing hardened concrete-Part3:Compressive strength of test
specimen

SPECIMEN

3 cubes of 15 cm size, but we tested 1cubes

CURING

The test specimens are stored in moist air for 24hours and after this period the specimens are
marked and removed from the molds and kept submerged in clear fresh water until taken out
prior to test.

The water for curing should be tested every 7days and the temperature of water must be at
24 +/- 2C.
PROCEDURE

1. Remove the specimen from water after specified curing time and wipe out excess
water from the surface.
2. Clean the bearing surface of the testing machine
3. Place the specimen in the machine in such a manner that the load shall be applied to
the opposite sides of the cube cast.
4. Align the specimen centrally on the base plate of the machine.
5. Rotate the movable portion gently by hand so that it touches the top surface of the
specimen.
6. Apply the load gradually without shock and continuously at the rate of
140kg/cm2/min. till the specimen fails
7. Record the maximum load and note any unusual features in the type of failure.

NOTE

A minimum of 3 cubes should be tested, but we tested 1cube.

CALCULATIONS

Compressive strength() = (Maximum Load / Cross sectional area of the specimen)

Size of the cube =15cm x15cm x15cm

Cross sectional area of the specimen = 15cm x15=225cm2=0,0225m2

Maximum load applied =1036kN=1036.103N

1036 103
= = 46044,4 103 = 46
0,02252

RESULTS

Average compressive strength of the concrete cube =46MPa=46 N/mm2 (at 28 days)

SPLITTING TENSILE STRENGTH TEST ON CONCRETE CYLINDERS

Date Tested : 29 -04-2010

Tested By : II. Class of Civil Engineering
Project Name : CE206-Building Materials Lab Project -2(Testing of Hardened Concrete)
Reporter : Ali Haydar TA

AIM

To determine the splitting tensile of concrete.

STANDARD REFERENCE:

TS 500:Requirements for design and construction of reinforced concrete structures

TS EN 12390-6:Testing hardened concrete-Part6:Tensile splitting strength of test
specimens

APPARATUS

Compression testing machine, two packing strips of plywood 30 cm long and 12mm wide.
CURING

The test specimen should be stored in a place at a temperature of 24 +/- 2C for 24 hrs. from
the time addition of water to the dry ingredients. After this period the specimen should be
marked and removed from the woulds and immediately submerged in clean fresh water or
saturated lime solution and kept there until taken out just prior to the test. The water or
solution in witch the specimen s are kept should be renewed every seven days and should be
maintained at a temperature of 24 +/- 2c.

Concrete cylinder 15 cm diameter and 30cm long. But we tested 10cm diameter and 20cm
long.

NOTE

A minimum of 3 cylinders should be tested, but we tested 1 cylinder.

PROCEDURE

1. Take the wet specimen from water after 28 days of curing

2. Wipe out water from the surface of specimen
3. Draw diametrical lines on the two ends of the specimen to ensure that they are on the
same axial place.
4. Note the weight and dimension of the specimen.
5. Set the compression testing machine for the required range.
6. Keep are plywood strip on the lower plate and place the specimen.
7. Align the specimen so that the lines marked on the ends are vertical and centered over
the bottom plate.
8. Place the other plywood strip above the specimen.
9. Bring down the upper plate to touch the plywood strip.
10. Apply the load continuously without shock at a rate of approximately 14-
21kg/cm2/minute. Note down the breaking load(P)
CALCULATION

The splitting tensile strength is calculated using the formula:

=
. .

= Split tensile strength

P = Maximum load applied

D = diameter of the specimen

L = length of the specimen

For given sample

P=156,6kN

D=10cm=0,1m

L=20cm=0,2m

,
=
= ,
, ,

RESULT

Splitting tensile strength of given concrete =5MPa=5N/mm
