My Educational Philosophy

You want someone to run a four-minute mile? You dont chase them. You dont give

them something to run from. You give them something to run to. (Richard Webber) Very early

on in my life I knew that I wanted to become a teacher. As a young child, you dont think about

money as a motive or at least I didnt. I knew that I wanted to have a classroom full of students

all for me to teach. As Ive grown older I realize that my passion for teaching only increases

with the years. My philosophy in education is rather simple. I want to change lives.

Life changing teachers help their students feel safe. We must offer physical,

emotional and intellectual safety. A person cannot learn if they are anxious or

afraid.

Life changing teachers possess a contagious passion for learning. Excitement

about education is contagious and we should be offering this excitement 100% of

the time.

Life changing teachers know when to be tough. Pushing your students to reach

their full potential is not an easy task but excellence is never easy. We should be

able to know how to apply boundaries and practice discipline to prepare our

students to not only be scholarly savvy but also a good person.

Life changing teachers love their students. Students are not an interruption of our

work, they are the purpose of it. We must demonstrate gestures of kindness and

believe they are capable or anything.

I believe the role of our students should be to grasp as much knowledge as they can

and for them to do this successfully, educators should also serve as a resource. How

can we serve as a resource? We need to get to know our students. We need to be aware

of their likes and dislikes; consequently, we need to know who they are.

To me education is the most important part of this world. There may be doctors,

astronauts, presidents and scientist but they all started as a student somewhere in this

world. They all had a teacher that encouraged and told them that the sky is the limit.

To be a teacher is to be a superhero and thats exactly what I intend to be.

Rationale

It is of the upmost importance for all of my class to use every minute in

wisely. It is also very imperative that I continue to practice lessons that will engage

every student. Walking around in my classroom will allow me to make sure all

students are staying on task; this will also allow me to have more one on one time

with all students even those who sit in the back of the class room. I have also decided

to set up two different white-boards in my classroom so that I can go back and forth

and use both when teaching a new lesson. This will allow all students to feel closer to

me and not always have to face the front of the class for every lesson.

We will also have a reading area that will allow students who are done

with their work early to go relax and read on our classroom couch. This will be used

as a tool of motivation. In the back of our classroom there is a table that contains all

handouts for students who may have been absent and need to catch up. I will allow

them to get their make-up work and stay an additional 5 minutes after class to get

them caught up. Overall, Id like my classroom to have structure and rules but also

feel like a safe place in which everyone is free to ask questions.

Classroom Procedures

General Procedures

Beginning of period- At the beginning of the period, Students will be in their assigned

seats with their required materials for the period out on their desk. Students phones will

be zipped inside their backpacks with ringers off.

Attendance check- I will take attendance by calling out students names.

6

Previously absent students- I will have a folder in the back of the classroom available

with handouts and homework instructions for each day. Any student who was absent will

have one day to make up class work and turn in to me.

Tardiness- Students who are tardy will quietly without causing any disruptions will enter

class and go to their assigned seats. At the end of class they can present/hand in note or

pass to me to excuse their tardiness.

Student Norms/ Expected behavior- Students will be respectful and kind to everyone

and everything (materials used in class). They will not leave the classroom until after

requesting a bathroom pass from me. They will not use any electronics unless it is part of

the lesson.

Materials-Students will be expected to have 1 folder for class, 1 notebook for loose

paper, 1 pencil or pen and any required reading materials.

Pencil Sharpening-Students will only be allowed to sharpen their pencils once direct

instruction is completed.

Ending the period-Students will have 1 minute at the end of the class period to pack up

and put their materials away once I instruct them to.

Seat-work and Instruction Procedures

Student Attention-Students should always pay their undivided attention to direct

instruction and others who are presenting or answering questions.

Student Participation-Students will participate in class and will be aware this counts as

daily participation points (5 daily participation points). Teacher will use student name on

popsicle method to randomly call on students.

7

Talking to Peers- Student can talk among each other when working in groups only about

their assignment/project.

Getting help-If I am walking around the classroom students may raise their hands, and I

will come to assist them. If I am at my desk, students may come ask me for help.

Fire and disaster drills-Students will abide by fire and disaster drills with the utmost

care. They will be on their best behavior and will stay off their phones to remain attentive

to their surroundings.

Discipline Strategies/Rules and Consequences

1. Always be kind in our classroom.

If you are a repeat offender and say disrespectful things more than once in our

class you will be privately written up. You will also have to write an apology

letter to the class.

2. Maintain an open mind inside our classroom.

If you continue to shut other peers thoughts down (2 times max) instead of

questioning them and listening to them you will receive lunch detention and write

an apology letter to that peer you offended.

3. Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

If you are remaining quiet and are not earning your daily 5 participation points

you will have come to my class during your lunch time (scheduled appointment)

and tell me what is going on. We need to work on a plan to assist with your class

participation.
