Feeding The Neety From The Hear
There are 47,720 people in the Wiregrass who will go to bed tonight, not knowing
if they will eat tomorrow. That’s called food insecurity. It happens when you don’t
have enough healthy food in your household for your family to thrive.
The Wiregrass Area Food Bank serves Houston, Henry, Dale, Coffee, Geneva, and
the southern portion of Barbour County.
47,720 people = 17% of the population of our service area = 1 in 6 going hungry
daily
One in four of those are children.
One in seven of those are senior citizens.
Most of the non-profit organizations and churches in the area who distribute food
for free to the public get that food from the Food Bank.
The Food Bank helps during times of natural disaster. Many of the Food Bank
sources for food product donations has been re-routed to Florida, Texas and Puerto
Rico to help after the recent storms resulting in a 26% deficit for July through
September.
Our USDA allocation has been reduced by 31% for October through December,
this amounts to 78,000 pounds of food that will not come to the Wiregrass.
The Food Bank distributed 3.3 million pounds of food throughout the Wiregrass in
2016-17 or 10,000 per day!
With your monetary donation, we will purchase food with the hope of offsetting
the deficit in food donations.
In the Wiregrass, | in 6 is hungry. That means 5 in 6 can help!
