Introduction
Any Harvest Moon game includes a variety of activities for your Character. Cooking is an activity that
allows your Character to use all the Crops he/she grows, the Fish he/she catches as well as the items found in the Wild
as ingredients in Dishes that can be shipped, stored, consumed to restore energy levels or given to other individuals as
Gifts. Sunshine Islands is no different in this respect. In fact, Cooking is extremely vital in Sunshine Islands as it
allows you to create Dishes that will restore your Energy in terms of Stamina and Fullness far more than any raw
ingredient. Many traditional Harvest Moon games define Energy Levels as a combination of Stamina and Fatigue.
When Stamina reaches zero, Fatigue kicks in and begins to increase. Both Island of Happiness and Sunshine Islands
have a different system. Energy Levels are based not on Stamina and Fatigue but on Stamina and Fullness. This makes
the games a bit more challenging as going to sleep will not restore your Fullness. If you go to bed on an empty
stomach, you will awaken with an empty stomach!
Fortunately, the two restaurants in Sunshine Islands are open from the very start of the game, although you
will not be able to afford to patronize them until you have earned some money. As is usual in Harvest Moon, any
Cooked Dishes purchased at a Restaurant must be consumed on the premises. There is no take-out menu! Nick's Diner
on Verdure Island and Haila's Cafe on Sprout Island are open on non-Festival Days from 6.00 a.m. to 11.50 p.m. On
Festival Days, when any Festival begins at 10.00 a.m. and ends at 6.00 p.m., they are open from 6.00 p.m. to 11.50 p.m.
This is a welcome change in Sunshine Islands. In most Harvest Moon games, doors are securely locked throughout any
Festival Day, irrespective of the time at which the Festival actually occurs.
1
The Recipes that you can obtain from Nick and Haila are prompted by the offer of specific ingredients.
Those that are easiest to obtain may not be the most practical, however. The Recipe for Green Dumplings, for example,
requires a special Festival item in the form of Rice Candy.
Even if you obtain a Recipe that is not practical early in the game, it is a good idea to collect as many
Recipes as possible as quickly as possible. There are two reasons for this. The first is that every Recipe obtained will
increase your Farming Degree point total and thereby increase your title. The second is that Recipes are given in a
specific order. If you receive a Recipe that you cannot cook immediately when you offer either Nick or Haila an
ingredient the first time, it is possible that the second or third time will yield a very useful Recipe.
Recipe Alterations:
In the game, you sometimes can add optional ingredients to boost the Stamina or Fullness value of a
Recipe given to you by Haila or Nick. To do so, choose the option to 'Make some Alterations'. Before you actually
cook the Dish, the result will be displayed at the top of the upper screen, letting you know in advance if you are
doomed to create a Failed Dish. In fact, an improvement in a Recipe often is the key to winning the Cooking Contest.
Entries are judged according to their Stamina and Fullness value. You therefore are much more likely to win the
Contest with an improved Recipe that has more value in Stamina Recovery and Fullness than the original basic Recipe.
If you do not have an ingredient that is needed in the original Recipe but have a comparable item, you
sometimes can use the 'Make Alterations' option to substitute one ingredient for the original. For example, the original
Recipe for Sashimi calls for a Medium Fish. You can improve the Recipe by adding a Large Fish to the Medium Fish,
but if you do not have any Medium Fish, you actually can use the 'Make Alterations' option to substitute a Large Fish in
place of the Medium Fish originally required. In like fashion, if you do not have a Mushroom but have a Mushroom
Cluster, you can use the 'Make Alterations' option to substitute the Mushroom Cluster to make Steamed Egg Custard
with only a Mushroom Cluster and an Egg. If you wish, you actually can overwrite the original Recipe so that, in
future, the required ingredient is Mushroom Cluster rather than Mushroom. This is possible only with respect to
ingredients in certain Recipes. Always look at the top screen to see what the Result will be before you actually cook
any Dish using substitutions or additions.
2
Testing Optional Ingredients
A note of caution: Make certain that you do not substitute a required ingredient with an optional
ingredient when trying new combinations or it will be a 'Failed Dish' even when the optional ingredient would have
worked otherwise! You need to move the cursor to an empty slot before you attempt to add an optional ingredient.
Otherwise, the new ingredient will take the slot of one of the original required ingredients.
Poisonous Mushrooms/Toadstools
There are four different general Categories for the Mushrooms that can be found growing wild on Mushroom Island,
although there are many different varieties for each, apart from the Truffle. Collecting at least one Mushroom of each
variety is one of the 'completion goals' in Sunshine Islands. The actual Mushroom type that you collect is randomly
loaded into the game at the moment when you pluck it from the soil. If you are determined to collect a specific type,
therefore, you can save your game before you collect a Mushroom and reload if you do not find the type that you seek.
Note that some Mushroom types are limited to certain seasons. As there is no urgency to this completion goal, it may
not be worth the effort to reload.
The four general Mushroom Categories are as follows: Mushroom, Mushroom Cluster, Poisonous
Mushroom/Toadstool and Truffle. Each general Category has its own unique physical appearance on the ground and in
your Rucksack. Specific varieties of mushrooms within any general Category are noted only at the moment when you
collect them with a little text prompt. Once stashed in your Rucksack, they are designated only by their general
Category and can be stacked.
A Poisonous Mushroom can be useful either as a Gift for some one who loves them, as an Ingredient given
to a chef to prompt a new Recipe or as an Ingredient in a Cooked Dish made at home. As a Favorite Gift, the Poisonous
Mushroom will be greeted with delight by the Witchkin, although the Witch Princess, her aunt, is not terribly
enthusiastic about them in Sunshine Islands. The two are non-romantic rivals of a sort and anything that one likes
usually is not embraced with joy by the other. As an item given to a Chef, the Poisonous Mushroom can be used only
once as an ingredient given to Nick at the Diner to prompt the 'Mix Natto' Recipe. As an ingredient in an existing
Recipe made in your Kitchen, it can be used often as an optional addition to any Recipe that will accept Mushrooms of
any variety. Note that its effect is different from that of Mushrooms in any other Category, as might be imagined. A
Poisonous Mushroom will not cause illness when added to any Dish successfully as an optional ingredient but it will
result in a decrease in Stamina Recovery Value even though it will improve Fullness Value. This is of no great
significance but is useful to know. If your Character's Fullness Gauge is not filled and you are low on ingredients, you
may find it useful to add a Poisonous Mushroom to a Recipe in a pinch when nothing better is available.
Twice-Cooked Dishes
ANY Cooked version of an item is worth more than the item as a raw ingredient in terms of Energy
Values. You can compare any Single-Ingredient Recipe with the raw item to see how greatly cooking enhances its
value.
For example, an ordinary Egg if eaten raw is worth +3SR +2FL. If cooked as a Boiled Egg or Spa-Boiled
Egg, its Energy Values are enhanced to +24SR +16FL for either of the two. Add nothing more than Oil, an ingredient
that you can buy for 50G and which raw has the low Energy Value of 1SR 1FL to the Egg and cook it into a Fried Egg
and you boost the Energy Value to +28SR +26FL. In like fashion, ordinary raw Milk is worth +2SR +1FL but when
made into Hot Milk has a much improved value of +22SR +12FL.
These are examples of an item that, cooked once, increases in potency in terms of its Energy. Cooking a
Cooked Dish for a second time can enhance the value of some Cooked Items.
For example, Bread, made with Wheat Flour, is worth +5SR +5FL. Take that Bread and make it into Toast
and using only the same original ingredient, you then have a Cooked Dish with a value of +15SR +10FL. Rice Balls
are made with a single portion of Cooked Rice. Here you have an example of the value of cooking an item three times,
actually. Rice as a raw ingredient has a value of +1SR +1FL. Make it into (Cooked) Rice in the Kitchen and its value
becomes +5SR +5FL, identical to that of Bread. Take your (Cooked) Rice and make it into a Rice Ball and you
increase its value to +10 SR +10FL. Toast it, making it into a Toasted Rice Ball and the value increases to +15SR
+18FL! In other words, you can triple the value of the original Cooked Dish by cooking it twice again to make new
Dishes which, although they have different names, consist of nothing more than the same original ingredient. It is
particularly useful to know this when you receive 12 Rice Balls at the end of the Rice Festival. Make Toasted Rice
Balls and you will have 12 fairly decent Recovery Items for emergencies.

Cooking for Festivals
Cooking Contest
As Pierre will be living on Verdure Island from the very start of the game, the Cooking Contest will take
place even in the 1st Year. In Sunshine Islands, entries are solicited by Category. As is usual in any Harvest Moon
game, you must visit the venue of the Festival twice. Your first visit must occur before Noon. Speak to Pierre to
discover the 'theme' of the current Contest. Although the Themes follow the order in which the Categories are
displayed in your Kitchen Cookbook, you may not be able to enter the Contest if you did not experience the actual
announcement dialogue with Pierre before noon. This is a detail that I must test but it is better to be 'safe than sorry'.
You can travel to the Meadow for any Festival either via Kirk's boat or via Teleport using your Teleport Stone. You
must arrive before the clock reaches the final hour designated for the Festival.
When you have obtained the Theme from Pierre, you must create your Entry at home and then return to the
Meadow before 6.00 p.m. If you are using the Teleport Stone, this means that you must enter at 5.50 p.m. at the latest.
As with any Contest in Sunshine Islands, there are four different prizes for participation. Provided you enter, you WILL
obtain a prize. 1st Prize is a Wonderful, the color of which is determined by the day of the Festival and the weather two
days AFTER the Festival Day. 2nd Prize is 3 Wonderful Pieces. 3rd Prize is 2 Wonderful Pieces and 4th Prize is a single
Wonderful Piece. The fact that you will gain at least one Wonderful Piece simply by entering any Contest makes it
worth your while to do so even when you have little chance of winning 1st Prize.
7 Wonderful Pieces are needed to create a Wonderful. If you stack Wonderful Pieces obtained in different
Festivals, the Wonderful that is created ALWAYS WILL BE PURPLE. If you do not stack them but keep Wonderful
Pieces won in different Festivals separate in your Cabinet, you have a chance of obtaining different colors of
Wonderfuls when Charlie combines them into a single Wonderful.
Winning 1st Prize at the Cooking Contest is a matter of the Energy Values of the Cooked Dish that you
submit. It should go without saying that you must enter a Dish in the designated Category if you do not wish to be
disqualified. Competition can be fairly stiff, even in the early years, so you really must add Optional Ingredients to any
Dish that you enter if you wish to have a chance of taking home a Wonderful.
In this Guide, you will find both the SR (Stamina Recovery) and FL (Fullness) Values of every Dish listed.
These Values represent the Energy Values of the Basic Dish, however. As you are not given precise numerical values
for any 'altered' Dish that you create, these cannot be added to this Guide easily. What you will see, whenever you add
optional ingredients successfully to any Dish, is a prompt that will state whether or not the result gives 'More', 'Less' or
'Equal' Stamina and Fullness. Using these prompts as your guide, you therefore can experiment with different
combinations.
Whenever you hit upon the best combination of SR and FL, you can 'overwrite' the original Recipe in your
Cookbook with the improved Recipe. This by no means will force you to make the improved Recipe each time you
cook the Dish in future. You always will have the option to 'Make Best Recipe', 'Make Basic Recipe' or 'Make Some
Alterations' each time you open the Cookbook Menu. If you choose 'Make Best Recipe', the game will create your
Improved Recipe provided you overwrote the original Basic Recipe in your Cookbook. If you choose the 'Make Basic
Recipe' option, the game will use only the original Required Ingredients.
In your first year, it may be difficult to win 1st Prize with your Salad as an Entry for the Cooking Contest
but it should not be impossible. In many Harvest Moon games, the Cooking Festival is held in Spring. In Sunshine
Islands, it occurs on 13 Summer. In your first year, you definitely should have some Turnips and the Recipe for Pickled
Turnips. If you are diligent in planting early Summer Crops, you may have harvested your first Onions before the 13th
of Summer, giving you the option to make Onion Salad as well. Remember that it is worth the effort to participate,
even if you have no chance of winning 1st Prize.
By the second year, you should have no trouble in winning a Wonderful at the Cooking Contest by
submitting a Soup/Drink that is rich in optional ingredients. Relax Tea with optional additions should be a guaranteed
winner. It usually is in any Harvest Moon game.
4
Sunshine Islands reminds me a little of Rune Factory Frontier where ingredients that may appear to be
perfectly sound and appropriate may result in a Stew that is less than superior. Tabitha's Responses in Rune Factory
Frontier represented an official judgment of the ultimate quality of the Stew based on your Character's donation. In
Sunshine Islands, all Characters will respond differently to what appear to be three different possible results. If the
Stew is truly superior; all Characters will make this clear. If the Stew is acceptable, all Characters responses will echo
this fact. If you donate a Poisonous Mushroom to the Stew, however, every one will be affected in a negative fashion.
Beyond this, your Character will become ill to the point where he/she will be sent directly to bed and resume control
only the next morning. It therefore is not a good idea to donate a Poisonous Mushroom to the Harvest Festival Stew
unless you have no intention of saving the result afterwards.
5
The Dish was Baked Yam. As in FoMT and MfoMT, you can add a garden Stone to the Dish as an
Optional Ingredient. The Stone was of 'D' Rank, however, and although the resulting Dish had a better Fullness effect,
it was supposed to be equal to the Basic Dish in Stamina Recovery. When I made the Basic Dish using only an 'A'
Rank Yam without the Stone, however, it actually refilled the Stamina Bar completely. The augmented Dish did NOT
refill the same Bar. I tested it twice with the same result each time.
Completed Cookbook
The following are all Recipes that can be added to the Cookbooks in your Kitchen, organized according to
the game Categories. Each is listed according to its order in Sunshine Islands, with its average shipping value, required
ingredients, the item by which the Recipe can be obtained initially, Energy Values in terms of Stamina Recovery and
Fullness and finally, all Optional Ingredients.
You may find this Cookbook Guide to be necessary rather than simply useful as the individual ingredients
in any Recipe recorded in your Kitchen Cookbooks are denoted solely with a pictorial icon and not by any name. If
you cannot identify every ingredient in the game, you may be at a loss where some Recipes are concerned unless you
refer to this Guide. This is the reason why I was at some pains to complete the Cookbook Guide as quickly as possible.
