Software Based Electronics Education Kit 2016

1. Introduction and Background

The primary purpose of laboratory based Electricity and Electronics learning process in high
schools is to convey key information and engage students in the process of science. This
cannot
take place without the availability and proper use of laboratory facilities and other needed
resources. Regarding available laboratory resources, quality of education that students
receive
depends on the availability of an overall school facilities in which teaching and learning
takes
place. Quality, relevance and access to education can be attained if and only if educational
materials are properly available and utilized in an educational institution.

Science education in particular provides good standards for people and leads to cultural
developments. Also scientific development is the most affective factor in leading developing
countries in to the main stream contemporary technology and commerce. It would seem
clear
that all the developing countries like Ethiopia should accelerate the development of science
education as learner-centered, teacher-assisted, action oriented, and project based
education
program.

In Ethiopian context, the Government has recently introduce policy of 70:30 percent
professional
mix in annual enrolment, with 70% of intakes allocated in to science and technology
streams and
30% in to the social science and humanity steams [6].The rationale behind this initiative is
the
belief that science and technology are the engines of development and that Ethiopias
prospect
hinges on the availability of sufficient stock of national expertise in these fields by its higher
institutions .This shows that, the country has intended to reduce its dependence on the
imported
expertise and technology.

However, research in Ethiopia indicated that students beginning from lower grades have
serious
knowledge deficits in science and mathematics; this signifies that the quality of science
education in primary and secondary schools, which is critical foundations for latter
educational
development, is at crisis. At this point it looks imperative to raise some questions related to
the
70:30 professional mix proposed by MOE [2], [6] and [7].

Therefore, this work is focused in identifying the main problems in teaching and learning
laboratory based Electricity and Electronics in various secondary and preparatory school
levels
and aim at bridging the gap to bring solution/s to the problem to alleviate some of the
problems.

2. Problem Statement

As discussed in background part earlier, Electricity and Electronics is one of the subjects
offered
in the Secondary and Preparatory schools. It is true that, knowledge obtained from the
Electricity
and Electronics is applicable in any technological and engineering work, and also its benefit
for
developing countries like Ethiopia is unquestionable. However, laboratory based teaching
and
learning of Electricity and Electronics in the secondary and preparatory schools of the
country
have been encountered by many problems. There are lots of problems in the teaching and
learning of Electricity and Electronics.

1. Lack of the Teachers and Students Guide, for Electricity and Electronics Laboratory
Exercises.
2. Lack of Internet Service
3. Lack of Laboratory Equipments

4. Lack of Laboratory Components

5. Inadequate Space for Lab or Lab Facilities
6. Lack of Proper Laboratory Session Administration

Research Proposal, Debre Birhan University Page 5

Software Based Electronics Education Kit 2016

3. Motivation

The majority of students in the secondary schools, especially in Grade 9 and Grade 10 had
no
interest to learn Physics and this result the low achievement in EGSSCE. In addition to this,
the
students in the preparatory grades (Grade 11 and Grade 12), had also low interest in
Physics
when compared with other science subjects [2].Majority of preparatory students choose
natural
science stream only to join healthy related fields when they will be admitted to higher
educational institutes, because they assume that, they cannot cope up physics dominated
fields
like engineering and technology. Also statistics shows that majority of students scored very
poor
result in the entrance examination to higher educational institutions, besides this, teachers
in
these schools had low motivation to teach physics, the reason could be due to some
problems
encountered in teaching and learning of Physics [7].

So, it is necessary to study the problems that affected the teaching and learning of physics
in the
general secondary and preparatory schools and provide solution to the problem. In order to
alleviate this problem teachers and students laboratory guide should be available in
enough
quantity and quality. Laboratories should be furnished with the necessary equipments for

practical activities. And also there should be properly trained physics lab assistance for
setting up
apparatus for practical demonstrations and
experiments.

can measure DC/AC Voltage (up to 20V DC/C Voltage), DC/AC Current (up to 1A
DC/AC Current) and Resistance (up to 20M Resistance Value).
Design and Implementation of Specific Demonstration Circuits, this part is all about
designing and implementing specific demonstration circuits based on the
requirement
analysis which will be done.
Design and Implementation of Display Components, this part is all about design and
implementation of all necessary display units for the hardware.

The detail of all the above major design parts will be presented clearly on the
Requirement
Analysis and Design Documentations.
