( 3) Lateral Load Carrying Capacity

Young's modulus for concrete, E = 5000 F ck E: 29580 x 10 kg/cm
(Assuming M 35 grade concrete to be used)
4
Moment of Inertia of pile cross-section I : 10178760 cm
Modulous of subgrade reaction
reaction, K1, used from K1 : 0 500 kg/cm2
0.500
Table-1, Appendix-C,
Embedded length Le : 1050 cm.
Free length or pile projection above ground L1 : 0.00 cm.
Determining depth of fixity of pile: -
For piles in sands and normally loaded Clays
Stiffness factor of pile, T = 5 (E x I/K1) = 359.7 cm.
Le < 4T , Hence I.S.method is not applicable
Depth of fixity of pile, L f = ( Lf / T) x T = 1.92 x 359.7 cm. ( For free head pile)
= 690.6 cm.
Depth of fixity of pile, L f = ( Lf / T) x T = 2.18 x 359.7 cm. ( For fixed head pile)
= 784.2 cm.
Thus the relationship between deflection(Y in cm.) of pile head and lateral load(Q in kg) is as follows,
( For Fixed head pile) ( For Free head pile)
3
Q(L1 + Lf) Q(L1 + Lf)3
Ycm = Ycm =
12 x E x I 3xExI
= 0.00001335 Q kg = 0.00003647 Q kg
Thus for 5mm deflection, lateral load on pile will be
Q = 37467 kg Or 37.5 ton Q = 13710 kg Or 13.7 ton
Thus for 12mm deflection, lateral load on pile will be
Q = 89920 kg Or 89.9 ton Q = 32905 kg Or 32.9 ton
Safe lateral load for 5mm deflection on pile, 37.5 = 37.5 ton

N.B. (1) The lateral load carrying capacity of a single pile depends not only on the horizontal subgrade
modulus of the surrounding soil but also on the structural strength of the pile shaft against bend-
ing consequent upon application of a lateral load .While considering lateral load on piles, effect of
other coexistent loads should be taken into account. Because of inadequate data on horizontal
modulus of soil, it is suggested that the adequacy of a design may be checked by an actual field
load test.
(2) Above Pile may be constructed as per IS 2911(Part-1/Sec-2) and Load carrying capacity may
be conformed as per IS 2911(Part-4)
