System Components

What is the relationship between MC cylinders and

a hydraulic power unit (HPU) and valves?
Cylinders provide the force
HPU provides the hydraulic
pressure and flow
Directional valves determine
Advance/Hold /Retract movement
of the cylinder
Accessory valves:
Pilot operated Check Valve: holds cylinder
position
Flow Control: controls cylinder speed
Pressure reducing/relieving valve: reduces
pressure in circuit
Direction Control Valves

Specification Questions

Information helpful for Power Unit design

Load (if applicable)
Pressure (PSI)
Flow (GPM)
Power (HP)
Application (Actuator size and speed)
Duty Cycle (if available)
Dimensional Restrictions
Electrical Capacity
# of circuits
Types of valves
Logic
Special actuation needs (Example 2 hand-no-tie-down)
Specification Questions:
Required GPM
Calculating required flow rate (gpm)
Calculating Cylinder Volume:
Bore diameter x .7854 (constant) = area (in)
Example: 4 bore cylinder = 4.00 x 4.00 x .7854 = 12.57 in
Volume = area (in) x stroke (in)
Example: 4.00 bore, 12.00 stroke = 4.00 x 4.00 x .7854 x 12.00 = 150.80 in
Total system volume = Cylinder volume x # of cyl
Example: System with 2) 4.00 bore x 12.00 stroke cylinders and 2) 5.00 bore x 6.00
stroke cylinders
4.00 x 4.00 x.7854 x12.00 x 2= 302.59 in
5.00 x 5.00 x .7854 x 6.00 x 2 = 235.62 in
Total system volume = 538.21 in
1 gallon = 231 in
538 in = 2.33 gal.

Required gpm = System volume/ speed

Example: 2.33 gal of flow required in 10 seconds
2.33 gal x 60sec/min /10 sec.= 14 gpm
Specification Questions: Required
Horsepower
Calculating required Horsepower (hp)
hp = (gpm x psi)/(1714 x efficiency)
hp = (gpm x psi)/(1714 x .85)
hp= (gpm x psi)/1457
Example:
Flow rate: 14 gpm
System Pressure: 2500 psi
hp = (14 x 2500)/1457
hp = 35,000/1457 = 24 h.p
Determining Reservoir size:
Rule of thumb is: Reservoir size (gal) = Flow rate x 3
Example: 14 gpm x 3 = 42 gal = 40 or 50 gallon reservoir
Specification Questions: Manifold
Mounts
How do I select the right pump mounted manifold?
Are the valves going to be mounted on the pump mounted manifold or
remote mounted on a separate manifold? (DO3/5 vs. P&T )
How many valves are required? (How many stations)
What size are the valves? D03 or D05? Must consult pressure
D03 valves are used in circuits with maximum flow of 12 -17 gpm
4 way/3 position valves:
Must consult
Open Center ( All ports to Tank): Max flow: 17 gpm
component
Float Center ( A & B to Tank, P blocked): 12.5 gpm specifications to
Tandem Center ( P to T, A& B blocked): 11.5 gpm determine flow
Closed Center ( All ports blocked) : 17 gpm capabilities
D05 valves are used in circuits with maximum flow of 25 gpm
4 way/3 position valves:
Open Center ( All ports to Tank): Max flow: 25 gpm
Float Center ( A & B to Tank, P blocked): 25 gpm
Tandem Center ( P to T, A& B blocked): 23 gpm
Closed Center ( All ports blocked) : 25 gpm

Two-hand anti-tie down
6 bore-30 Stroke

This hydraulic unit is used to power a 6 bore, 30 stroke Milwaukee Cylinder

on a suspension spring assembly application. Three remote mounted switches
were supplied and wired in, as a safety loop to two remote mounted manual
spring to center lever valves that must both be activated for the cylinder to
move. The dual manual lever valve set-up works as a basic two hand anti-tie
down circuit.

Two-hand anti-tie down
Extra large cooler for
high duty cycle operation

Application: HPU incorporated on a machine frame to power 10 block

cylinders to punch holes in a metal part. The application has a heavy duty
cycle requiring rapid oil delivery at 2500 psi. Cycles are controlled by
customer supplied two-hand anti tie down pneumatic loop, that powers a
pump mounted DO3 air piloted directional control valve.
