HVDC transformers a technical challenge

Thomas Hammer, Peter Heinzig

(Siemens Power Transformers, Nueremberg, Germany)

Abstract: Design features of the components of

HVDC transformers are introduced, including the
core, windings, valve windings and DC-bushing. It is
indicated that cooling of core should be specially
regarded, since a few amperes DC-current can

increase the no load losses up to approx. 20%, and can

increase the noise by up to 22 dB. Considering DC
related stresses, insulation between AC and valve
winding is different, the winding end of the lead must 40
suite to the winding end barrier system and the
bushing end of the lead must suite to the oil port of the
HVDC bushing. The design requirements of modern
DC-bushing are listed. Finally, the testing feature and
manufacturing requirements of HVDC transformers
are briefly described.
