UNIDAD 1 WELCOME TO THE ENGLISH WORLD!
1.1. Introduccin
Welcome to the English world! My name is Matthew and I will be your teacher
during this course. In this first unit we will learn to greet, the alphabet, the
numbers...and you will have your first contact with the English language.
I hope you improve a bit more your English in the Practice, Listening and
Reading sections.
I am sure you will improve your English, too, playing some games and reading
about the city where Susan and I are spending some days.

Bienvenido al mundo anglosajn! Mi nombre es Matthew y ser tu profesor

durante este curso. En esta primera unidad aprenderemos a saludar, el
abecedario, los nmerosy tendrs un primer contacto con la lengua inglesa.
Espero que mejores un poco ms tu ingls en los apartados de Prctica,
Lectura y audicin!
Estoy seguro de que tambin mejorars tu ingls con los juegos y leyendo sobre
la ciudad donde Susan y yo estamos pasando unos das.

In this part of the topic we will listen to three dialogs.

In the first one (Audicin 1), Susan and I want to show you an example of how
two people introduce each other in English.
In the second one (Audicin 2), we will show you how to say hello.
And in the third one (Audicin 3), listen to me asking personal questions to
Susan and pay attention to her answers.

En esta parte del tema escucharemos tres dilogos.

En el primero (LISTEN 1), Susan y yo queremos mostrarte un ejemplo de cmo
dos personas se presentan en ingls.
En el segundo (LISTEN 2), te mostraremos cmo se saluda.
Y en el tercero (LISTEN 3), escucha las preguntas personales que le hago a
Susan y pon atencin a sus respuestas.

1.3.3 Los ttulos
TITLES
Los ttulos se aaden al apellido de una persona para mostrar su posicin oficial
o simplemente respeto.
Son:
Mr, Mrs, Ms, Miss, Sir, Madam
Mr = Sr.
Mrs = Sra
Miss = Srta.
Ms = Sra. o Srta.
Por ejemplo:

Mr Smith and .Mrs Smith
Miss Murphy.
Recuerda que el ttulo va delante del apellido.
Los ttulos de cortesa en plural son:

Mr. - Messrs.
Mrs. Mesdames
Miss Misses
Ms. - Mses. or Mss.
SABAS QUE
Ms se emplea cada vez ms. Se utiliza esta forma para evitar expresar el estado
civil o la edad de la mujer. En espaol no existe Sir o Madam lo emplean mucho
los empleados de restaurantes, hoteles, etc ...
Por ejemplo: Goodbye, sir! Good morning, madam!

Adis, seor! Buenos das, seora!
Pero cuando hablamos a alguien de un seor o de una seora no usamos los

trminos sir y madam, sino lady (dama) y gentleman (caballero).
Por ejemplo: This lady/ That gentleman (Esta seora/ Ese seor)
1.3.4 Los nmeros cardinales
Vamos a estudiar aqu los nmeros cardinales del 0 al 50.

Cardinal numbers:

Del 1 al 20 los nmeros en ingls los tienes que aprender de memoria, pero los
que van despus son ms fciles porque siguen una misma estructura. Por
ejemplo, despus de twenty va twenty-one, twenty- two y as
sucesivamente hasta twenty-nine
Slo tienes que aprender: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60,(twenty, thirty) y despus
aadirle one, -two
Fjate en la diferencia entre 13 y 30. Los nmeros que van del 10 al 20 acaban
en een y las dems decenas en y.

1.4 Gramtica
The grammar is very important to learn a language. It is necessary to learn

some grammatical rules to improve a language.
In this topic we will learn how to express the age, to use the verb to be born
, the personal pronouns, and the verb To be. Then we will practice doing
exercises.

La gramtica es muy importante para aprender una lengua. Necesitamos

aprender reglas gramaticales para mejorar un idioma.
En este tema aprenderemos como expresar la edad, a usar el verbo nacer,
los pronombres personales, y el verbo ser o estar.
Despus practicaremos haciendo ejercicios.
Empecemos!
1.4.1 Pronombres personales (subject)
Pronombres personales como sujeto.
Un pronombre es una palabra que sustituye a un nombre. En ingls el

pronombre personal como sujeto siempre se usa en la oracin. As por ejemplo,
en ingls diramos Im a teacher (Yo soy profesor), mientras que en espaol
podramos decir Soy profesor, sin necesidad de poner el sujeto Yo. Ntese
que el pronombre I se escribe siempre en maysculas.
Aqu tienes los pronombres personales sujeto:

* Se podra traducir como ello aunque no tiene equivalente exacto en espaol.
Reemplaza cosas, animales...
Estos pronombres tienen funcin de sujeto y se colocan delante del verbo en

oraciones afirmativas:
E.g.
I am at the university.
Estoy en la universidad.
We are in Spain.
Estamos en Espaa.
They are happy.

Son felices.
SABAS QUE
I es el pronombre personal de 1 persona singular, y siempre va en

mayscula.
es el apstrofo que se usa para abreviar. Por ejemplo: I am = Im.
Es ms propio del lenguaje hablado, y ms informal que la forma no contrada.
En ingls el sujeto es siempre necesario, al contrario que en espaol. As por
ejemplo, en ingls diramos Im a teacher, mientras que en espaol podramos
decir Soy profesor, sin necesidad de poner el sujeto Yo.

El pronombre personal de 2 persona es igual en singular y en plural, es decir,
que se utiliza el mismo (YOU) para T que para VOSOTROS, y debemos
saber a cul se refiere por el contexto.
IT se utiliza para hablar de animales o cosas. En espaol, aunque casi no se
usa, se podra traducir como ello/a.
1.4.2 To Be (ser/estar)
El verbo ser o estar.

Aqu tienes el verbo ser o estar en presente simple
La forma completa es ms formal y ms usada en la escritura, y la forma

contrada es ms informal y ms usada para hablar.
En la forma interrogativa del verbo to be tenemos que cambiar el orden del

sujeto y el verbo, y poner la interrogacin nicamente al final.

La negacin del verbo to be se forma colocando not despus del verbo.
Como ves, para la forma negativa aadimos not a la forma afirmativa. La forma
negativa contrada de is es isnt y la de are es arent.
SABAS QUE
En ingls los signos de interrogacin y exclamacin, slo van al final de la frase,

y no al principio y al final como en espaol.
1.4.3 La edad
The age
En ingls para preguntar por la edad de alguien siempre empezamos la

pregunta con How old? y continuamos la pregunta utilizando el verbo to be
ms un sujeto.
Por ejemplo:
A. How old are you?
Que significa Cuntos aos tienes?
En espaol para preguntar la edad utilizamos el verbo tener, que en ingls es

to have.
Por eso, un error frecuente que debemos evitar es utilizar el verbo to have

(tener) para preguntar o decir la edad en ingls.
I have five. X
I am five.
En la respuesta se utiliza tambin el verbo to be:

Im x years old o Im x.
Que significa: Tengo x aos o Tengo x.
Otro ejemplo:
A: How old are you?

B: Im fifteen years old/ Im fifteen
A: Cuntos aos tienes?

B: Tengo 15 aos /Tengo 15
La edad
RECUERDA
En ingls y en espaol no coincide exactamente la estructura para preguntar la

edad, ya que la traduccin literal al espaol de HOW OLD ARE YOU? Sera
Cmo de viejo eres?, y la de Im fifteen years old sera Soy 15 aos viejo.
Por eso, un error frecuente que debemos evitar es utilizar el verbo HAVE (tener)
para decir la edad. Se utiliza, como ya hemos visto, el verbo TO BE (ser o estar).
1.4.4 I was born(nac)
Utilizamos el verbo to be born (nacer) cuando hablamos de nuestro nacimiento,

fecha o lugar. Significa nacer.
El verbo to be born en ingls tiene forma pasiva. Puede ser difcil para los
espaoles porque el verbo nacer es activo en espaol.
Podemos verlo aqu.
I was born in Dublin.

Nac en Londres.
Iwas born in 1978

Nac en 1978.
