Welcome to Epic Training for Student Nurses!

These materials will help you to prepare for your clinical experiences at the Partners Healthcare
hospitals that use Epic for their Electronic Health Record. The eLearnings that you will view are from
standard Epic eLearnings, so will vary slightly from what you will see when you use Partners eCare. There
are notes here and at the end of this module to highlight the differences from what we have in the
Partners eCare version, as well as some functions that are different for student nurses.

Outline of Content
These 11 eLearnings from Epic and a Partners Tip Sheet on Student Nurse Documentation will
introduce you to the Epic electronic health record.
You may review them all at once, or do a few at a time, then return later to complete more.
They will continue to be accessible to you via HealthStream even after you complete the eLearning
so you may review them again.

The topics covered are:

2. Overview of Patient Assignments (INP060)
3. Review of the Chart. (CLN059)
4. Nurse Charting Tools (Worklist, Flowsheet, MAR overview). (INP064)

Student Differences from the eLearnings

As students, some of the differences from what you will see in the eLearnings and what you will see in
Partners eCare are:

You will Identify a Cosigner when you log in to Hyperspace. Your cosigner is your Clinical
Instructor from your school, or, if you are a Senior Practicum student, enter the name of your
unit Preceptor.
You may View Orders but not Acknowledge them. Only an RN may Acknowledge orders.

Your documentation in the MAR, Medication Administration Record, requires dual
signatures. Dual signature means that your Clinical Instructor or Preceptor must co-sign at the
immediate time of medication administration.
All student documentation fields should be reviewed by the Clinical Instructor or Preceptor.
Your documentation of a note will be in
Your documentation on flowsheets will be Pended until cosigned by an RN, and marked with
light grey slash marks to indicate it is not yet cosigned.

Partners eCare Differences from the eLearnings

The Partners eCare version differs from the standard Epic version in a few ways, including:

When you open the patient chart, in addition to Chart Review you have PHS Viewer. PHS Viewer
gives access to patient documents and results from systems used by Partners prior to Epic.
The format of the Flowsheets and Navigators have been customized to a Partners eCare version.
When documenting physical Assessments in the Flowsheet, Partners eCare nurses use Nursing
Minimum Data Set (NMDS) instead of Within Normal Limits (WNL), which is used in the standard
Epic examples.
Notes by nurses currently are most often basic notes without Smart Links or Smart Text templates.
Check with your hospital to confirm the types of notes used.
When you scan a medication with a scheduled time, the default time on the administration window
will be the time scanned or if manually documented, the time the Medication Administration
window was opened (not the scheduled time).
Piggy back medications, such as antibiotics, may not have a default volume, so you may need to
enter it onto the flowsheet manually.
Intake/Output activity defaults to three 8-Hour shifts.

HealthStream Assessment
You will complete a course Evaluation and an Assessment at the end of this HealthStream course.

1. The 30 questions in the Assessment have content from the eLearnings and the Student Nurse
Documentation document that you will review.
2. Please NOTE: an 80% score is needed to successfully pass this Assessment.
3. You have 3 tries to achieve a passing score, after which you will be locked out of the system.
