HOOK
1. Is the first sentence a hook that grabs your attention? If so, underline in blue.
2. Is the hook effective? If not, what can they do to improve it?

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
3. Does the first paragraph give background information that leads up to the main argument for the essay? If so,
underline yellow.
4. Will the average reader have enough background information to understand the background information that was
provided?
5. Did the reader include specific examples or textual evidence from any of the sources read in class? If so, make a
note that these need to be moved into the body paragraphs and do not underline in yellow.

THESIS STATEMENT

6. Underline the thesis statement in pink. (This should be the last sentence of paragraph 1). If there is not a thesis
statement, do not underline anything in pink.
7. Does the thesis statement define their interpretation of what it means to be an American?
8. Does the thesis provide a complex and thoughtful definition of what it means to be an American? What are the
different aspects of being an American according to this person? Number each aspect in the thesis statement.
