On 6 April 1896, one of the worlds most famous sporting events was reborn in Athens,
Greece: the Olympic Games. The Games, an ancient Greek tradition, hadnt taken place for
around 1500 years.
The first recorded Olympic Games were held at a place called Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC.
However, many historians believe that the Games were already at least 500years old at that
time.
The ancient Olympics occurred every four years, just as they do now, and were part of a
religious festival in honour of the Greek God Zeus. By the fifth century BC they involved
competitors from about a hundred different cities from all over the Greek empire. The earliest
Games only included running races, but as time went by other events such as wrestling,
boxing, javelin throwing and horse racing were introduced.
A Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin, was mainly responsible for organising the return of the
Olympics in the 1890s. The 1896 Games in Athens involved 280 participants from thirteen
different countries. There were 43 different events, including track-andfield (athletics
competitions that involve running, throwing or jumping), swimming, gymnastics, cycling,
wrestling, fencing, shooting and tennis.
However, the 1896 Games were very different from the Olympics of today in at least three
different ways: there were no female competitors, winners received silver instead of gold
medals, and the participants included a few tourists who were in Athens at the time and were
allowed to take part.
The 1896 Games included what is possibly the most famous track-and-field event in the
modern Olympics: the marathon. The race followed the 40-kilometre route run in 490 BC by
a Greek soldier who carried the news of an important military victory from Marathon to
Athens. The result of the 1896 race was therefore rather appropriate: a Greek runner won.
Nine of the other eleven track-and-field events were won by Americans.
In much more recent times, the Olympics returned to Athens in August 2004. There were
record numbers of participating countries (201) and events (301). Womens wrestling was
included for the first time.
Just as in 1896, American athletes performed very strongly: the US won more medals than
any other country (although surprisingly its basketball team, full of professional stars, lost to
gold-medal winners Argentina). China came second in the medals table, and Russia third.
Two countries with relatively small populations also showed their sporting excellence, just as
they have done in many other Olympics: Australia (20 million) came fourth in the medals
table, and Cuba (11 million) managed eleventh position.
QUICK DEBATES
As the ancient OG, female athletes shouldnt have to participate vs
female athletes bring a touch of glamour in the OG.
The Olympic Games should be for amateur athletes vs this is a better
show with professional athletes.
In the history of the Olympics there have been times when countries
have boycotted the games for political reasons. Do you that WAS
justified? Yes vs no
Dou you think it can ever be acceptable to take drugs or medicines
during a sports competition such as the Olympics Games? yes vs no
How do you think athletes who cheat should be treated? Should they
be disqualified, banned, stripped of their medals or given a second
chance?
