DISCLAIMER
The reason I chose my project topic to be Rare Birth Complications is because thats something that
interests me and I wouldnt get bored of.
I chose to go to the Labor and Delivery unit and Clear Lake Regional because I have always had an
interest in being able to see the realities vs fantasies of this unit
I decided to go to Clear Lake Regional because I knew Mrs. Stephanie worked there and it would be
easiest to work with her and I was interested in seeing what she does on a day to day basis.
MENTOR
A tube that is inserted into the bladder in order to drain and collect urine.
IV PUMP
The IV pump is a device that regulates and controls the amount and or speed at which a patient
receives medications and fluids.
BABY/MOTHER BAND
My mentorship site is Clear Lake Regional. Clear Lake Regional has been open for more than 40 years.
KEY POINTS
It is normal to bleed after a delivery, especially if you had a C-section, BUT it is not normal to have excessive bleeding and that is what
a postpartum hemorrhage is. It is loosing more than 500ml of blood after delivery.
This occurs in 18 percent of births
The nurse should press on your stomach to help it to contract down and you will know if you have this complication because you will
have an excessive amount of bleeding and your health provider should notice and take action!
Usually to treat this your provider will give you uterine massages and medication. In rare cases, blood transfusion, removal of
residual placenta, or a hysterectomy may be needed.
This type of complication cant really be controlled, there is no known way of preventing this

RUPTURED UTERUS
The majority of ruptured uterus happens from where a scar was from a previous C-section, this is part of the
reason doctors are highly against that. This happens during labor because the scar is most likely to give way
under the stress of those contractions.
The way they treat this is they do an emergency C-section, if the bleeding cant be controlled mother will have
a hysterectomy. The mother usually looses a lot of blood and requires a blood transfusion.
You WILL know If this is happening to you during labor. Moms heartrate will increase, baby's heartrate will
increase and mom may even sometimes have symptoms of shock and vaginal pain.
The thing makes a uterus rupture is having a C-section before and having that scaring and then trying a
vaginal delivery, this is why this complication is so rare because most doctors dont recommend this.
Less than 1 percent of women have this happen

catastrophe.html
INVERTED UTERUS
An inverted uterus means that the uterus is tilted toward the rectum rather than forward toward the
belly. Sometimes this can cause a miscarriage
This type of complication is genetic
You would have symptoms of painful sex and VERY severe pain during period
There is no way to prevent this from happening because it is genetic
Usually the treatment will be different exercises or medication and in more severe cases surgery.

CONCLUSION
I got to see a few deliveries and I learned how they place the epidural and how to palpate a stomach
after delivery. I hope to learn how to recognize when a patient needs a C-Section. Ive really enjoyed the
time I have gotten to spend with my mentor and learn so many things. As I was doing my current event I
found out that this woman passed away, in September in Hawaii, from amniotic fluid embolism and the
next week Stephanie actually was able to explain it to me more into depth.
PRODUCT
I want to first give a huge thank you to my mentor for letting me follow her and teaching me to the best of
her ability. I also want to thank Mrs. Click for the time and effort she puts into her ISM classes and all
others. Thank you to my mom and dad for supporting me in everything I do, and last but not least thank
you to the evaluators who are taking time out of their day to watch my presentation.
