1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
The reality of the job is that it is mentally and physically tiring after a days work, that you are
always moving and there is always something to be done. The fantasy of the job is that many people
think that they make so much money but they dont make all that much. Some people think that they
only deal with the children but they deal with the whole family including the extended family.

2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?

Right now she currently has her bachelors, 4 year degree to work on the floor. She is also
currently working on becoming a CPITON.

3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
A typical day for Mrs. Douglas is to check her email, charting system, listen to voice mail for any patient calls and
that is done all before 8am. Then she will go to the floor and listen to rounds, identify any new diagnosis patients,
then prepare any educational papers they need, and then educate them.

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?

Nursing and education will always be such a high demand so she feels as though her job is
secured. In the future Mrs. Douglas hopes to become a nurse educator.

5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
For most places it depends on where you work and how much experience you have to offer. At
Texas Childrens Hospital staff nurses can make anywhere between $30.00-$50.00 an hour.

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?


(growth potential)
In nursing it can range from a bedside nurse to a CNO, someone who helps maintain the flow who
advocates for the nurses. Another opportunity could be to become clinical nurse specialist or get your
PHD and become a professor.

7. What made you want to become a pediatric oncology nurse?


She knew she always wanted to do Oncology but when doing her rotations fell in love with pediatrics
when she was doing her residency at Texas Childrens Hospital so decided to combined the two.

8. What is the most rewarding part of your job?


The most rewarding part of her job is the one on one with the family. Also being a resource for the
family and see what she says helps educates them.

9. What is the hardest part of your job?


When there is a lot of new diagnosis it is hard for her to get to everyone right away. Another hard part is
seeing a patient pass away, she says you always remember the first one.

10. What is the most frequent question you are asked?
What do we do when we go home, is the most frequently asked question because the patients are
worried when they have to go home and take care of their sick, fragile child.
