ATBR3306 Architecture Design Studio III (DAR2)
Project Brief (2 Oct 2017)

Project 1: Art Installation (5%)

You are required to prepare a 3D spatial installation artwork for the School of Architecture (SOA) Tunku
Abdul Rahman University College. The main function of the artwork is to create a new aesthetic
view for SOA and show the uniqueness of SOA. You have to create an interesting artwork at the
Block SE and SF of East Campus to impress all the TARCIAN, and at the same time express your
design philosophy and your vision for architecture.

Tasks

You will be assigned in a group of 3 or 4, to design a 3D spatial installation artwork, which is intended to
be representative of SOA. The artwork will be using recycle materials, such as timber, wires, tubes, tapes,
strings etc, (only maximum 2 types of recycle materials can be used in the artwork), which are creatively
put together in an artistic manner. You must choose a proper location in Block SE or SF to locate your
artwork. The spatial installation artwork can be in the form of stand-alone at corridor or entrance,
hanging on ceiling or wall. In order to complete the project, you are required to produce a full-scaled
model, of course, you are going to locate the artwork model in the exact location at Block SE or SF that
you have chosen earlier. A mini artwork model with the scale of 1:5 and ONE (1) A1 drawing comprising
your design concept and drawings are needed for presentation.

Project 2: The Retreat House - Artist Sanctuary (90%)


Your client a Malaysia artist, intends to build a retreat house for his/ her family (2-4 persons) which is
also used to serve as a secondary residence for them to avoid the disturbance from outside social media.

Tasks

You will need to prepare a design proposal of a building which has mentioned above, the residence will
have limited functional spaces, e.g. living space, kitchenette, bathroom and etc. It is expected that the
residence will be in single-storey with a mezzanine floor. The total built-up area shall not exceed
200sqm.

Project 2 will be undertaken in FOUR (4) stages as follows:

STAGE I: PRECEDENT STUDIES (Group Work) 5%

You will be assigned in a group of 4 or 5 for this task, you will need:
To select ONE (1) residence in Malaysia as a precedent study. Each group is to select a different
residence.
To study in detail the concept, planning and architectural design features of the selected
residence.

Your submission shall include:


Analytic Composition: ONE (1) A1-size drawing (rendered in 2B 6B pencils) illustrating the
design concepts, important architectural features and other relevant information pertaining to
the precedent study. All parts of the drawing shall be composed in a professional manner no
cut and paste is allowed. The drawing shall be permanently fixed on 4mm thick plywood based
and framed with 25mm wide black cardboard margin all round in front.

Project duration: 1 week

STAGE II: SITE ANALYSIS (Group Work) 10%

With the same grouping in previous task, you will need:


To select a site in Klang valley which is in 500sqm. Each group is to select a different site.
To study the chosen site (500sqm).
To collect the relevant data regarding the site.
To analyse the context of the site covering various aspects such as accessibility, traffic circulation,
neighbourhood development, sun path, topography, existing vegetation, human activities,
services etc. Special attention must pay on the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat
(SWOT) on those aspects.

Your submission shall include:


A1-size drawings consisting of key plan, location plan, site plan, sections, analysis diagrams and
sketches, photographs and a short write-up about the site.
A site model (1:25), on a 20mm thick plywood base.

Project duration: 2 weeks

STAGE III: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PROPOSAL (Individual Work) 25%

To choose and study detail on the clients information. The client must be an artist in Malaysia.
To conceptualize the design of the retreat house.
To finalize the conceptual design proposal by preparing the necessary drawings and models.

Please take note on the following design requirements for the retreat house:
The building shall be only in timber construction.
Only pitch roof is allowed in building design.
The building shall be in simple post & beam, short span design.
The building shall be in single-storey with mezzanine floor.
The built-up floor area of the retreat house shall be approximate 200sqm.
Services of cool water supply and sewerage shall be integrated into the design of the building.
Design of hard landscape and soft landscape shall blend well with the respective retreat house.

Your submission shall include:


A1 size manual conceptual drawings comprising site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections,
perspectives (of both interior and exterior) and a write-up of your design concept (including the
relevant conceptual sketches to help illustrate your design process).
An architectural conceptual study model (1:25) of the building for the proposed retreat house
(only building, site not required).

Project duration: 3 weeks

STAGE IV: FINAL DESIGN PROPOSAL (Individual Work) 50%

To develop the design concept into a workable design by considering the structure, services and
finishes etc.
To finalize the design proposal by preparing the necessary drawings and model.

Your submission shall include:


A1 size drawings comprising key plan, location plan, site plan (with roof plan), floor plans, FOUR
(4) elevations, TWO (2) sections, sectional details and perspectives (of both interior and exterior)
as well as a write-up of your design concept (not exceeding 500 words). All plans and sections

ATBR3306 Architecture Design Studio III (DAR2)
must be generated from AutoCAD (not SketchUp) and composed and rendered in Photoshop.
Only elevations and perspectives are allowed to be generated from SketchUp. All print out must
be in A1 size, continuous print in roll is not allowed.

ONE (1) architectural model (1:25) on a plywood base with site boundaries, proposed external
soft landscape, hard landscape, carpark and access to site. The model must be in monochrome
and in properly labelled with project title and students particular.

Project duration: 4 weeks

Portfolio (5%)

Compile all A1 size drawings of the Project 1 and 2 with ring-binding and hard cover.
Compile all the Project 1 and 2 in the size of A3 in creative methods with the proper cover design
to show yourself as a design student.

Project duration: 1 week

Submission

All your works must be submitted not later than 12pm on the day preceding the day of presentation.

Assessment

Projects 1, 2 and Portfolio will contribute 5%, 90% and 5% respectively to your design studio grade for
this semester.

Time Schedule

The total time length for all the projects above will be 13 weeks. The time schedule is as follows:
