Justice-oriented lesson plan

Objective: Acceptance of different cultures


Standard: Interactions among cultures lead to sharing ways of life.
Grade: Second
Topic: Civic participation and Skills

Learning Goal: The student will be able to write about what is important to them
and their family and share these things with the class after reading The Name Jar
and consequently understand that everyone is different and have different cultures.

Skills/Dispositions: Diversity, respect, community, citizenship, morals, and


acceptance.

Materials:
The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi
Writing Journal
Pencil

Lesson:
1. Ask the children where they are from and if they know anyone that is from a
different country.
2. Introduce the book and tell the children that they are going to see some
things that the main character does they may not understand and that that is
okay.
3. Read book.
4. Ask the students about what are some of the things that were important to
Unhei.
5. Ask the students if they know where Korea is and what continent it is on
6. Show students Korea on the map and point out where it is in relation to the
United States.
7. Have the students go back to their seats and answer the following questions
in their writing journals:
a. Do you think Unhei should have kept her name? Why or why not
b. Does your name have a special meaning to it? If so what is it?
c. Do you have anything that was given to you that is important to you
and who you are? These things could be anything from a toy to name
stamp like in the book.
8. Begin collaboration with the class:
a. Talk about what the students said in their journals.
b. Talk about why it was important that Unhei kept her name because it
represented whom she was and where she came from and the special
things that make the students who they are and represent where they
came from.

c. Also stress that everyone will have different things and come from
different places and that is okay and that we should understand them
and accept them for who they are.
9. Close the lesson by having each student bring in one thing that is important
to them and having a show and tell with the class in the future and have the
student explain why that is so important to them.
