Names: Elba Andrade Subject Area(s): Algebra II

Susan Mejia

Lesson Topic: Introduction to Complex Numbers Grade Level(s): 9th

Standards
Literacy Standard(s):
RST
Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects 612
Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to
the precise details of explanations or descriptions.

Content Area Standard(s):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSN.CN.A.1
Know there is a complex number i such that i2 = -1, and every complex number has
the form a + bi with a and b real.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSN.CN.A.2
Use the relation i2 = -1 and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties
to add, subtract, and multiply complex numbers.

7. Evaluating language choices Explain how successfully writers and speakers

structure texts and use language (e.g., specific word or phrasing choices) to
persuade the reader (e.g., by providing evidence to support claims or connecting
points in an argument) or create other specific effects, with substantial support.

Lesson Objectives & Supports
Content objectives:

SWBAT identify complex numbers and its parts.

SWBAT perform basic operations (add, subtract, multiply) with complex numbers to simplify the
expression.

Literacy objectives:
SWBAT describe and cite with evidence some of the uses of complex numbers in real
life.

Academic vocabulary:

Literacy strategies and Integrated ELD Strategies (SDAIE, Specially Designed

Academic Instruction in English):

Activating prior knowledge (Newfield2005): the warm up problems are

designed for students to try to make sense out of the new material by seeing how
it fits with what they already know. Same purpose with the reading,
Connecting the new to the known (Tovani, 2000): every student has at some
point in his life watched an animated movie, therefore the reading will make
sense if they can relate it to some movie they have watched.
Structured Note taking (Buehl, 2013): this strategy provides and effective well-
organized visual display of important information and key vocabulary.
Quick Writes (Buehl, 2013) this strategy is used in this lesson so the students
can summarize their reading and describe what they found interesting or
important
Name and provide a brief (1 sentence) description of each literacy and SDAIE
strategy used in the lesson.
Be sure to include a reference (author, date) for each strategy.

Assessment: How will you know if students met your objectives?

Given an expression in a + bi form, students will identify the real and imaginary part
of the number.
Given an expression that contains imaginary numbers, students will simplify the
expression using appropriate algebraic and arithmetic properties.
Student will turn in a sheet of paper listing different examples (researched on the
internet) of how are complex numbers used in real life.

Instruction: What youll teach, and how
