In the Introduction to "They Say/I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing,
Gerald Graff, and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to assist writers when debating
a position about a subjective topic. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of
writing templates that they offer will make an argument more so interesting as well as original.
They believe this because the model helps introduce a viewpoint that opposes the writers
allowing the information on the topic to broaden. The topic being argumentative allows the
reader to view both sides of the subject and determine which position is more valid. As the
authors state, "Agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously-is one we especially recommend since it
allows you to avoid a simple yes or no response and presents a more complicated argument while
containing the complication within a clear on the one hand / and another hand'
framework"(Birkenstein and Graff 9). Although some people believe that these templates can
create repetitiveness in writing and can take away originality in the writers' piece, Graff and
Birkenstein insist that the use of this model will increase the level of sophistication and creativity
if used correctly. In summary, their overall view is that the utilization of these templates could
serve as a guideline. After all, even the most artistic or well-established people require some
form of structure.

I agree with Graff and Birkenstein due to the fact that the types of templates that the
authors recommend assist. For instance, when writing an argumentative essay, it can be
challenging to show the opposing viewpoint as well as the perspective of yourself. With the
assistance of the template, it allows the writer to successfully insert both sides of the argument
into a creative and unique format. Additionally, this model allows the writer to gradually display
their evidence as the stronger suit. Some might object that using the template will make the
argument bland and familiar. I would argue that to show a sense of creativity and sophistication
in writing the writer should be able to take any piece and transform it. Having the ability to place
your ideas into something that exists makes it unique. In conclusion, I believe that the template
serves a sole purpose that improves writing in a resourceful way, which is an important point to
