CVE5302: REINFORCED & PRESTRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN
FINAL EXAMINATION: AUGUST 2016 SESSION

Instructions: This paper consists of TWO (2) sections. Answer ALL (3) questions in
SECTION A. Answer any ONE (1) question in SECTION B.

Section A:

Question 1: Design and Analysis of Prestressed Concrete Slab

The hollow core slab section of 900 mm width as shown in Fig. Q.1 is pre-stressed/pre-
tensioned with 4-12.9 mm diameter, 1860 MPa straight strands and is simply supported on
masonry walls with a span length of 6 m, center to center of the supports. It is used to
construct the floor of a warehouse.

In addition to its self-weight of 2.48 kN/m2, the section carries a superimposed live load of 11
kN/m2.

Concrete strength are fcu = 50 MPa, and fci = 35 MPa at transfer. And section properties are as
shown below.

a.) Determine the service load stresses at mid-span and check if the section is suitable for
Class 1 member using effective stress ratio R = 0.82 (i.e. 18% pre-stress losses) and
strands are jacked at 75% of fpu (15 marks)

b.) Determine if the section has sufficient capacity for the specified load. (5 marks)

c.) If the section is to be designed as a Class 2 member, what is the minimum section
required in terms of section modulus S1 and S2? Should the member be designed as
Class 1 or Class 2 member? State your reasons. (5 marks)

Question 2: Design of Earth Retaining Wall.

A cantilever wall is to support a bank of earth as shown in Fig.Q2 below.

The soil behind the wall is well-drained sand with the following properties:
Unit weight, = 20.0 kN/m3
Active soil pressure coefficient, Ka = 0.25

The wall has a thickness of 300 mm with a 300x300 haunch.

Assuming concrete strength, fcu = 30 MPa, and rebar strength, fy = 460 MPa, answer the
following questions, assuming d = 250 mm at the base just above the haunch. Sketch the
reinforcement details.

a.) Design the vertical reinforcement of the wall at the critical section just above the
haunch. What would be the spacing of rebars if T16 bars are used?
Use 1.4 load factor for soil pressure (10 marks)

b.) Check the shear of the wall at the critical section. (5 marks)

c.) Design the horizontal reinforcement of the 300 mm thick slab given the service load
soil pressure acting at the base of slab as shown in Fig.Q2, taking d = 250 mm. Find
the spacing of T16 rebars. Use 1.4 factor for all loadings acting on the base slab.
Take the design critical section of slab just at the left of the hunch (6 marks)

d.) Sketch the design results for walls and slabs (4 marks)

Question 3: R.C. Shear Wall Design

Two reinforced concrete shear wall 200 mm thick and 52.5 m high, connected by rigid link,
is subjected to a service wind loading of 6kN/m.

The average vertical service dead load acting on the wall at each level is 420 kN /story. There
are 15 stories as shown below in Fig. Q.3:

Given that fcu = 30 MPa, taking d = 0.8h and using chart No. 27 as given on Appendix,
design, at the base, the followings, assuming that the critical load case is (1.0DL + 1.4WL):

a.) Vertical reinforcement and its spacing for combined axial and flexure, using 2 rows of
T16 bars. (10 marks)

b.) Horizontal reinforcement for horizontal shear, using T10 bars. (5 marks)

c.) Sketch reinforcement details. (5 marks)

d.) Check if there is net uplift on the shear wall. (2.5 marks)

e.) What should the minimum length of the wall be if net uplift is to be eliminated? Show
calculations to justify. (2.5 marks)

Section B:

Question 4: Torsion Design

A fixed end beam of cross section 350mm x 500mm and of length 6900mm is loaded with 2
vertical ultimate point load Fu = 200 kN at the 3rd points as shown in Fig.Q4. It is also
subjected to 2 ultimate concentrated torque u = 13 kN-m at the 3rd points.

The fixed end moments at ultimate, Mu is calculated to be 307 kN-m. Calculate the ultimate
fixed end shear Vu and torsion Tu for design.

Use R12 bars for the design of combined shear and torsional links. fyv = 250 MPa, fy = 460
MPa.

Concrete strength is fcu=30 MPa,

Answer the following questions, taking d = 438 mm. Calculate x1 and y1 assuming the
distance between the closed link centroid and the concrete surface is 30mm.

a.) Plot the shear and torque diagrams for the beam and identify the maximum design
values of Vu, and Tu. Ignore concrete self-weight. (5 marks)

b.) Calculate vt to justify the requirement of torsional links. (5 marks)

c.) Design for combined shear and torsional links. (Use R12) (10 marks)

d.) Design the additional longitudinal reinforcement for torsion. (Use T8) (5 marks )

Question 5: Punching Shear of Flat Plate

A 600x400 rectangular column supports a flat plate of 450 mm slab for warehouse usage as
shown in Fig. Q5 below. The slab is reinforced with 20 mm bars at 150 mm c/c in both
directions at the support with 30 mm cover. The columns are spaced at 7.5 m in both
directions.

The service loads on the slab are: DL+SDL = 12 kN/m2, SLL = 15 kN/m2. The DL+SDL has
included the self-weight of the slab.

Assume fcu = 35 MPa, fy = 460 MPa and shear links are T8 single leg, design the punching
shear reinforcement around the column.

a.) Calculate V,eff for internal column. Check the maximum punching shear stress vmax at
the column face. What conclusion can you draw? (7 marks)

b.) Check the punching shear stress v at the 1st punching shear failure zone which is 1.5 d
from the face of support. Design the shear links. (12 marks)

c.) If the punching shear link is not a preferred solution for ease of construction. What are
the other options of solutions you could suggest? State and explain the merits and
limitations of each option. (6 marks)
