Negative Effects of Advertising on Teenagers

Abstract
One of the most controversial topics that advertisers need to address is the issue of advertising to
the youth. In this era of IT we are surrounded by gadgets and all other Technologies. Youth these
days are vulnerable to the access of this medium and can easily have a negative effect on their
brains. Critics charge threat advertising to children is inherently unfair and deceptive and should
be banned. On the other hand, are those that advertising is a part of life and children must learn
to deal with it in consumer socialization process of acquiring the skills needed to function in the
market place.

The Argument here is that companies refuse to admit the fact that advertisements
are effecting childrens mind on a negative way. They are with the notion that parents
should monitor their children and guide them what to or what not to watch. One group
feels that banning T.V ads would deny the advertisers to communicate with other age
groups. The growing Advertisements of fast food chains is making children incline more
towards junk food rather than healthy foods like Fruits and vegetables. Obesity in
Children especially youth have increased and many could be patients of diabetes, sugar or
heart related disease.
Recognizing that advertising may play an important part in educating the child,
information should be communicated in a truthful and accurate manner with full
recognition by the advertiser that the child may learn practices from advertising that can
affect his or her health and well-being. The controversy on ads aimed at children has
generated an ongoing steam of research on the effects of childrens advertising. Although
may influences affect a childs personal and social development, it remains the prime
responsibility of the parents to provide guidance for children. Advertisers should
contribute to this parent-child relationship in a constructive manner.

Introduction
Youth are exposed to many images and commercials for various products and services
each day. The excessive amount of media cannot be sidelined and is impacting our everyday
lives considerably. The effect of globalization has brought an unparallel change within our
society. The words like values, customs and family gatherings have diminished and has been
hijacked by social media. Youth these days spend more time on the internet rather than their
families. These do not just affect them physically but also mentally.
Statement of the Problem
As I Have discussed before in the Abstract that our main dealing in this research is the
negative aspects of Advertising in Teenage life. For this I have taken a sample of 30
questionnaires from students of National College of Business Administration & Economics and
in this way I could better elaborate the social problems of advertisements in the lives.

Youth are presented to many pictures and advertisements for different items and
administrations every day. The inordinate measure of media can't be sidelined and is affecting
our regular day to day existences significantly. The impact of globalization has brought an
unparallel change inside our general public. The words like esteems, traditions and family get-
togethers have reduced and has been captured by online networking. Youth nowadays invest
more energy in the web as opposed to their families. These don't simply influence them
physically yet in addition rationally.

Promotions are set through Internet, TV separated from the ordinary medias like the daily
papers, magazines, and on boards. As per promoting experts Stan Rapp and Tom Collins, on a
run of the mill day, a normal American sees more than 5,000 ads every day.

Literature Review
Effects of Television advertisement on Teenagers with special reference to Pakistani
Youth:
According to market research companies teenagers are important to marketers because they
spend substantial amount of income,spend family money easily and they influence their families
easily to buy household purchases that influences them. Therefore, marketers and advertisers are
seeking advertising spaces that are kids exposed to in order to reach them with such
advertisements designed to provide an illusion to them, and portray a certain image to their
innocent and trusting nature about a product or service. For example, in order to reach young
teenage girls, advertisers would use almost half the space of the most popular adolescent
magazines (Moschis & Mitchell, 1986).

(Moschis & Mitchell, 1986) State that the children between ages 12 or under convince their
parents and pupils to spend around millions a year.Similarly in teenagers this trend is more or
less the same.Marketers use different campaigns and promotions to attract the youth.When they
see the ad for instance of Katrina kaif or shah Rukh khan holding a Nokia or Samsung phone
they become more attracted to buy it because in their minds they think that these stars also have
the same product.

A study conducted recently is that most of the youth in major cities of Pakistan are unhappy with
their physical appearance and body image.when they see ads of skinny blonde women they try to
copy her by going to the gym or doing different therapies whinch in turn is harmful to their
health.
In conclusion,the effects of advertisements is negative .Parents,Teachers and psychologists
should help teenagers by motivating them and not letting them feel guilty about their physical
appearences or body image.

The effects of television advertising on young children:

The study has been critically analyzed and deeply monitored and have concisely elaborated the
adherences and the facts that tell us why TV Advertising is a major problem in Teenagers growth
and maturity.

During my study the majority of Teenagers I met were all fond of watching Television and about
90 percent of them watched it for about s how much time they are wasting and quitting things
that may help them in future.

Most of them watched their favorite T.V Shows or movies while others liked to watch a Cricket
match or football etc.The Lack of awareness among them was questionnable.Most of them only
knew about the positives but none knew about the negatives.

When asked if they watched T.V alone or with family most of them answered that they watch tv
alone in their own rooms.

The effect of Television food advertising on Children:

Different food chains these days have been promoting about their products at a rapid pace.
McDonalds, Hardees, Burger King and KFC the giants of food industry have successfully
molded the mindset of youth in buying food from their chains. As this is a great marketing and
selling strategy for the chains but on the contrary a harmful effect for the youth. These food
chains do not provide healthy food and result in the case of extreme obesity among youth
especially children. As we know that Pakistan is among the list of Top Twenty countries that
have a huge problem of obesity among children, and this has been growing at a rapid pace.
Countries like China and many in Europe are starting to ban or raise awareness in their people to
stop the use of these unhygienic foods.

Objectives of the Study


Children: To analyses the extent of awareness amongst children about the effect of advertising.
Parents: To analyses the awareness amongst parents about the effects of media/advertisements on
children.
Psychologist: To discuss the perception of Psychologist about the effects of media on children.

Analysis and Interpretation
Attached below is the unsolved questionnaire that I made for the 45 recipients which included
students,Teachers and Parents.Their prespective and side of the story was closely monitored and
interpreted.

Analysis: teenagers perspective


According to my research and finding I have come to the conclusion that teenagers these days
spend lots of time in front of the television and advertisements are there main influence.The
advertising has influence in such a way that teenagers eating habits have changed rapidly, they
tend to eat more fast food than home cooked food.

Analysis: Parents perspective


According to my research I have found that parents these days are more concerned about what
ther children are watching on the TV or their laptops etc.They encourage their children to use
Laptops and watching T.V but only for the right reasons. And as far as Advertisements are
concerned they want their children to avoid nudity and obscene content.

Analyses: psychological perspective


In order to make this research more comprehensive the researcher collected data from various
professionals from the field of psychology. Some of these were professors from the psychology
department of the amity university specializing in various fields such as relationship counsellor,
environmental psychology as well as counselling. Along with these the opinions of professional
psychologists were also collected. Each professional was given a questionnaire asking several
questions related to the impact of media and advertisements on adolescents from the age group
of 13-19 yrs. These questions were a mix of objective and subjective forms.

Research Design
The objective of my Research is to test that the advertisements have a negative impact on
todays youth. For this I have conducted a Questionnaire filling of 55 people which mostly
consists of Teenagers from ages of 16-19, whereas children and Psychologists would also be
included in my research. These questions are based on previous studies that have successfully
measure systematic beliefs. It is also important to measure the participants interest in Political
and campaign ads because this could make an impact on my research too.

Methodology
Primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire. The respondents were
asked to answer based on giving a rank to each statement on a 5-point Likert scale basis.

(5= strongly agree & 1 = strongly disagree) factor analysis technique was used to analyze the
primary data. The respondents were students of Graduation and Post Graduation in National
College of Business Administration and Economics, Lahore. Exploratory study was done to
determine the lifestyle of youth with reference to the effect that was created through the
Advertisements that were shown on Internet and Television.

Sampling method: Convenience sampling.

The respondents are requested to rank the statements on a 5-point Likert scale basis (5= strongly
agree & 1 = strongly disagree) factor analysis technique was used to analyze the primary data.
Secondary data was collected through research articles and published papers on the topic.
Background
Impact of media use on Children and Youth

1. Television
Television has both the positive and negative effects on a childs brain. The issue here is
that now a day nearly every child is exposed to this medium and parents are unable or least
bothered to do anything about it. But not all television programs are violent or consist of intimate
scenes, some channels have interesting and knowledgeable content that can help youth in their
creativity etc.

Television viewing frequently limits childrens time for vital activities such as playing,
reading, learning to talk, spending time with peers and family, storytelling, participating in
regular exercise, and developing other necessary physical, mental and social skills. In addition to
the amount of time spent in front of the television, other factors that influence the mediums
effect on children include the childs developmental level, individual susceptibility and whether
children watch television alone or with their parents.

2. Learning
Television can be a Powerful teacher or in the contrary it can also ruin a Childs thinking
as well. Advertisement that promote reading and learning are highly useful for a teenager. A TV
show like Who wants to be a Millionaire promotes learning and helps in advancing creativity
of a teen or a child.

Still, watching television takes time away from reading and schoolwork. More recent and
well-controlled studies show that even 1 h to 2 h of daily unsupervised television viewing by
school-aged children has a significant deleterious effect on academic performance, especially
reading.

3.Violence
Violence is on a rise and youth is heavily exposed to such contents. The heavy display of blood
and carnage sends a depressing and traumatic message to a childs brain. Media and Ad
Agencies should refrain from using too much of this content as the pleasure of boosting up their
ratings.

of spending their time on doing something productive they are more inclined towards watching

decisions on number of things but negativity can change the mind.

a backlash is candidate characteristics. For instance, research suggests that a candidates gender
and race can condition the way people respond to negative ads sponsored by the candidate.

Public service Announcements are another example of negative thing that can change people
thinking.Showing the gruesome reality of the activity and trying to stop and prevent it signals a
good thing and reaches the heart and mind of the consumer.

Moral values and social norms are created in Advertisement


This dilemma that Advertisements these days create some sort of moral values and social norma
in culture is not entirely true.Although some ads are pretty good but some have graphical and
explicit content that could potentially have a negative affect on a childs mind.

Advertising has the tendency to expolited a persons mind.Ads that contain elements of
greed,envy,hatred and racism are a bad thing for the society as a whole.

Much advertising directed towards children apparently explouits the children to buy the certain
product, in the hope that they will put pressure on their parents to buy products of no real benefit
to them.Advertising like these offends both the children and the parents.

Teenagers all over the word become addicted to smoking.Diffeent Tobaccoo companies around
the world argue the dileema that we are targeting adults but on the contrary its the youth that are
becoming attracted to moking each and everyday.Ina recent Medical research it was stated that
success of tobacco industry is by recruiting new people and by that I means recruiting children
who are too young to know that smoking actually harms your body.

A large number of tobacco advertisements it is believed are directed towards the younger
population and this is a luring technique which encourages the teenagers to start smoking at an
early age. Companies spend billions of pounds on tobacco advertisements. Tobacco Company
since they directed their advertisements to children as young as 14 years old. As this 14-24 age
group matures, they will account for a key share of the total cigarette
volume for at least the next 25 years.

Another similar problem among children that is rapidly affecting them is the Fast food
consumption.Fast fod companies promote their burgers,pizzas and ice creams by advertisemens
and different marketing campaigns.their ads are mostly popular among children and they
consume a lot of un healthy and un hygienic food which is harmful for them in long run.ads such
these should be limited and not promoted.

In sum, there is some evidence that negative ads can change the way individuals feel
about the candidates either by lowering evaluations of the target, lowering evaluations of the
sponsor, or both. Nonetheless, this evidence is highly conditional and, in some cases, quite
