Social Situation in Ancient Rome


Society was split up into two main social classes;
o Patricians Upper class citizens/landowners/high governmental
positions
o Plebeians Common farmers with the right to vote but not
much power
The system was a tri-partite government but the Emperor still looked
over everything
o Emperor
Senate
2 Magistrates Consuls also commanders in chief in
army
Were elected each year mostly by the senate
o Both the patricians and plebeians could vote, but it was the
particians votes which counted most that being topped by the
Senates opinion

Religion in Ancient Rome


Religion was very important in Ancient Rome
People spent most of their time worshipping Gods
Believed that the gods controlled everything that happened in their
lives
Used Greek gods; (Mars God of war, Neptune- God of the sea etc)

115 BCE Philosophy gained more popularity in the Roman scene;


Intelligent philosophers came from Athens to Rome in order to
reduce a fine on a city called Oropos which the Romans were
charging.
This introduced Romans studying in Athenian schools
Greek philosophers became more prominent in Rome
Educated Romans were expected to speak and write in Greek,
fluently
