Reflection Lesson #1

Recap
Today was my first lesson, and it went great! I was really nervous, because I know that
high school students can be cruel. But after it was all said and done, I was proud of how it went.
My objective for the lesson was that the students understand sports vocabulary and compare
and contrast sports in the Spanish speaking world with American sports.

We started off the lesson with an introduction for myself and an about me worksheet
that they filled out so I could learn more about them. We did a Kahoot to review old vocabulary
and introduce new vocabulary. Then the students paired up and formed their own inferences
about several Spanish sports soccer, jai alai, and cycling. After discussing the students
responses as a class, they wrote a paragraph about the sport of their choice while incorporating
the vocabulary they had learned.

Pacing
My pacing went well. I spent more time on student discussion in pairs than I had
intended. Since I was short on time, I decided to eliminate the flash mob since it was not
essential to the lesson, and I instead used the paragraph as an exit activity.

Successes
I think this lesson was successful because the students were engaged in the discussions
with their partner. The sports I presented were relevant to them because they were familiar
with cycling and soccer, but jai alai kept them interested because it was something totally
different. I also consider my behavior management successful there was only one instance
that required my attention and I simply called on the student by name and kept moving with
the lesson.

Challenges
Something I consider unsuccessful was my instructions. It was hard because the class is
supposed to be 90% in Spanish and I stuck to that, but that often led the students to be unsure
of what they were being told to do. I also would li

Teacher Persona
The main technique I used to present my teacher persona was through having an about
me slide at the beginning of my presentation. Im not sure how else my teacher persona was
conveyed, so I want to be more conscious of this next time.

Future
In the future, I want to monitor the use of English in the classroom on the part of my
students. This is not something I was very attentive to during my first lesson and I want to be

enforcing more use of Spanish in the classroom. I also want to make sure students are not on
their phones during lessons.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I believe my first lesson at the high school level went very well, but I would like
to think of a more fun and hands-on lesson for the next time around.

Reflection: Lesson #2
I will be videotaping my fourth lesson.
1. RECAP
My lesson objective was to have the students create four sentences that describe Hispanic art while
incorporating the estar + participle verb form. At the beginning of the lesson, my CT had to take some
time to give a written assessment required by the district, and this took away more time than I
anticipated. I went with the flow and adjusted my lesson accordingly. Rather than having the students
discuss their opinions on art for two minutes as an introduction, I used the review for the preterit and
imperfect as an introduction to boost their confidence before jumping in to the estar + participle form.
We did some practice with this and they did well, so their mastery of the verb form was achieved, but
the introduction of art was very brief and not as in-depth as I wouldve liked for it to be.

2. PACING
On my end, I think I did well with the pacing given the lack of time I was given to teach my lesson.
However, I should have skipped the get-to-know-you worksheet that I handed out to the students
because it took up valuable instruction time.

3. SUCCESSES
Based on the student responses and seeing their understanding of the verb form, I consider the lesson
to be successful. The students seem to have a firm grasp on the topic and understand how to use it in
context.

4. CHALLENGES
Because of the lack of time, I did not get to provide as much practice to the students as much as I would
have liked. I had to skip the activity I had planned for the students to get them thinking about how to
use the verb forms in sentences describing Spanish art, which I was really disappointed about.

5. TEACHER PERSONA
I made an about me slide at the beginning of my presentation to tell students a little bit about myself.
I also made sure to call on students by name so that I could call them by name and communicate that I
cared about them each individually.

6. FUTURE: What I plan to do differently.

For the future, I plan to skip activities that arent necessary to my lesson objective, even if they are fun.
Madison Ermenio

7. FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, I think this lesson went well because the students successfully learned the verb form, but they
didnt get the introduction to art that I wanted to focus on.
Reflection: Lesson #3
1. RECAP
My lesson objective was to have the students create four sentences that describe Hispanic art while
incorporating the estar + participle verb form. At the beginning of the lesson, my CT had to take some
time to give a written assessment required by the district. I had a better idea of how much time this
would take away and what I should use the remaining time to focus on. Instead of doing the get-to-
know-you worksheet at the beginning of class, I jumped right into the review of the preterit and
imperfect. I gave them less time to do the practice in partners because I felt they didnt need as much
time as I had given the previous class. Luckily, this allowed us to get to my activity I had originally
planned that incorporated the Spanish art pieces. This allowed the students to be exposed to art (the
unit theme) and also to demonstrate as individuals that they understood the past participle.

2. PACING
Since this was my second time to teach the same lesson, I really improved my pacing this time. I was
more aware of how long the assessment at the beginning would take and was thus able to adjust
accordingly to accomplish everything I wanted to during the lesson.

3. SUCCESSES
I think the students comprehension of the verb form really showed that my lesson was successful. I had
the students share their answers with the class when they were working both in pairs and as individuals
and their answers were on point. When I did a review at the end for an exit ticket, all the students
participated and knew the correct applications.

4. CHALLENGES
I think one of my greatest challenges in general, including in this lesson, is creating activities that
provoke higher order thinking. Im not sure how to create these types of activities nor how to execute
them in the classroom.

5. TEACHER PERSONA
My CT pointed out that one of my challenges was coming across as nervous she said that my face was
consistently red. But what can you do about that! Aside from that, my teacher persona was conveyed by
my about me slide and called on students by name to show that I care for them as individuals.

6. FUTURE
In the future, I would like to think of activities that will be more challenging to the students.

7. FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, I think this was an effective and engaging lesson for the students.

Reflection Lesson #4 /Video 1

My First/Second Video Reflection

BEFORE WATCHING MYSELF ON VIDEO
My objective was that the student will be able to write a 4-5 sentence compare and contrast
paragraph that compares American and Hispanic art using 3 vocabulary words and 2 instances of the
past participle after partner and class discussion. I did this by having students describe works of art
to one another and then by having them describe art individually in a written format.

AFTER WATCHING MYSELF ON VIDEO

Perspective: Self
Phase 1: The Physical Me: What am I wearing? What about my hair? Do I have a physical
teacher persona?
o I thought it would be horrendous to watch myself on video, but Im actually happy
with how I look. My clothes fit well, and theyre cute yet professional. My hair is
pinned up in a hair clip and looks well-put together. In terms of my physical teacher
persona, I appear to be pretty relaxed and comfortable.
Phase 2: The Behavioral Me: Is my body language effective? Is my use of language
comprehensible to the proficiency level of my audience?
o I think my body language is effective I often used hand motions to act out what I
was saying to help them understand the Spanish. I spoke at a pace that was
comprehensible to the level of the students knowledge of the language.
Perspective: Audience/Students
Phase 3: Student Response: Did the activities engage the audience and evoke active
participation and interpersonal communication? Did my pacing assure that engagement?
Did the audience response reflect my expressiveness, passion and confidence?
o The activities were highly engaging to the students. I had them do a kinesthetic
activity, and then I showed them several short video clips. chose videos that would
be fun and relevant to the students (cooking videos, Bob Esponja, Say Yes to the
Dress, and a baby deer). I also had them do a fun blind activity in which one
partner closes their eyes and the other partner describes a work of art to them.

Reflection Lesson #4 /Video 1

o Most of the students participated, including one student that has a history of lack in
participation and interest. The pacing between the activities was appropriate and
allowed for short breaks when needed. The students were attentive and seemed to
be enjoying themselves during the lesson.

Events Worth Mentioning

USE OF LOTE: How often I used my LOTE.
a. I used my LOTE about 90% of the time, which is right on target with Spanish III.
BIGGEST SURPRISE
a. I was surprised to see how attentive the students were to me. Before beginning the
640 semester, I anticipated that I would have a hard time earning the respect of my
students due to my size and age, but this has not been the case at all. My students
have been consistently engaged and respectful thus far.
PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT
a. One thing I want to improve is making sure that every student is engaged
throughout the lesson. There was one student that was rather shy and was not
necessarily engaged by partner work, and I wouldve liked to engage him more.

Reflection Lesson #8

Reflection: Lesson #8
1. RECAP
My lesson objective was for the student to be able to practice responding to speaking prompts in
partners to prepare for a speaking test. They will correct their partner-identified speaking errors
upon successive speaking attempts. In order to help the students achieve this lesson, I gave them
prompts similar to those of the test and gave them specific amounts of time to brainstorm and then
practice speaking with their partner.
2. PACING
My lesson went by faster than usual. However, I think it was still an appropriate lesson and provided
ample time for test review.
3. SUCCESSES
The format of the speaking practice was identical to that of the speaking test, so it set up the
students for success on the actual exam.
4. CHALLENGES
A huge challenge of this lesson was due to my CT. An hour before the lesson when I was already
on the way to the school she contacted me to let me know she wanted to make a big change to
my lesson. In addition, she didnt arrive to the classroom until 5 minutes prior to the lesson (I was
there 30 minutes early). Because of this, I was frantically trying to make the changes and get set up
for the lesson on time.
5. TEACHER PERSONA
I think I convey my teacher persona by being available to the students whenever they have
questions and by making sure I am approachable.
6. FUTURE
In the future, I would like to improve my ability to think on my feet. I think the shake-up in the
morning was hard for me because I am such an organized, planned person, so I need to work on
being more flexible on the spot when needed.
7. FINAL THOUGHS
This lesson was great for helping students familiarize themselves with the structure of the speaking
exam as well as getting them used to talking about art on the spot.

Reflection: Lesson #9
1. RECAP
My lesson objective was for the student to be able to practice responding to speaking prompts in
partners to prepare for a speaking test. They will correct their partner-identified speaking errors
upon successive speaking attempts. In order to help the students achieve this lesson, I gave them
prompts similar to those of the test and gave them specific amounts of time to brainstorm and then

ample time for test review.
3. SUCCESSES
The format of the speaking practice was identical to that of the speaking test, so it set up the
students for success on the actual exam.
4. CHALLENGES
A challenge in this class was their need for clarification of the instructions in English. While I totally
believe that this is sometimes necessary, it truly felt like I was using comprehensible input identical
to what I used during the first period, but these students just werent getting it. It honestly seemed
like they werent really paying attention to what I was saying, and I wasnt sure how I could change
that.
5. TEACHER PERSONA
I think I convey my teacher persona by being available to the students whenever they have
questions and by making sure I am approachable.
6. FUTURE
In the future, I would like to improve my ability to communicate instructions more clearly in Spanish
so as to avoid having to clarify completely in English.
7. FINAL THOUGHTS
This lesson was great for helping students familiarize themselves with the structure of the speaking
exam as well as getting them used to talking about art on the spot.

Reflection Lesson #5

Reflection: Lesson #5
1. RECAP
My lesson objective was: the student will be able to create their own song review using learned
vocabulary after having listened to and analyzed a song of their choice in groups. To teach this
lesson, I had them listen to a song of their favorite genre and then answer questions about it before
writing the review individually.

2. PACING
My pacing wasnt the best today. I felt my instructions were too rushed and so the students were
confused. I would end up having to re-explain the instructions which would take away time from
other activities.

3. SUCCESSES
I think this activity was really engaging because they were able to listen to a song that interested
them.

4. CHALLENGES
I had a hard time getting them to actually focus on listening to the song within their groups. It
seemed like they were getting off track a lot.

5. TEACHER PERSONA
I think I convey my teacher persona by being available to the students whenever they have
questions and by making sure I am approachable.

6. FUTURE
I would like to make sure my instructions are especially clear before beginning an activity.

7. FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall this lesson was just okay. It felt disorganized and out of my control not that the students
were misbehaving, but it seemed like they were off-task and I really didnt know how to address
that.

vocabulary after having listened to and analyzed a song of their choice in groups. To teach this
lesson, I had them listen to a song of their favorite genre and then answer questions about it before

2. PACING
My pacing went much better this time. I made sure to spend ample time giving instruction and
clarifying to the students so as to avoid wasting time later on trying to clarify misconceptions about
what the students were to be doing.

3. SUCCESSES
My control of the pacing was the best improvement in this lesson and made it significantly better. I
also walked around to the different groups more often and checked in on groups.

4. CHALLENGES
There were many fewer challenges this lesson since it was my second time to teach it.

5. TEACHER PERSONA
I think I convey my teacher persona by being available to the students whenever they have
questions and by making sure I am approachable.

6. FUTURE
I really liked giving the students somewhat of a say in this lesson (they got to choose their favorite
music genre and I then put them in groups). It made them more motivated

7. FINAL THOUGHTS
This lesson went much better this time when I adjusted the pacing to focus more on giving clear
instructions.

Reflection Lesson #8/Video 2

My Second Video Reflection

BEFORE WATCHING MYSELF ON VIDEO
My lesson objective was: After watching a video about a play of their choice in groups of four,
students will individually produce a four-sentence review of the work with three statements that
support a point of view I assign them (i.e. harsh critic, mild critic, total supporter, somewhat of a
supporter).

AFTER WATCHING MYSELF ON VIDEO

Perspective: Self
Phase 1: The Physical Me: What am I wearing? What about my hair? Do I have a physical
teacher persona?

I believe I appear professional with the way I am dressed and the way I have done my hair and
makeup. I think my physical teacher persona is very relaxed when I am in front of the students, and I
am glad that is how I appear, because I would like for my students to feel like they can approach me.

Phase 2: The Behavioral Me: Is my body language effective? Is my use of language

comprehensible to the proficiency level of my audience? Accurate?

I noticed that I dont use much body language to convey meaning, and I would like to use that more
to assist my students in understanding Spanish more effectively. I think for the most part my use of
language was comprehensible to the students, and I made sure to stop and clarify in English when
necessary.

Perspective: Audience/Students
Phase 3: Student Response: Did the activities engage the audience and evoke active
participation and interpersonal communication? Did my pacing assure that engagement?
Did the audience response reflect my expressiveness, passion and confidence?

While the students were watching the video in groups and filling out the worksheets, they were
engaged and participating. However, once the students had finished that task, they didnt have
much to focus on so most of the students simply talked to one another or spent time on their
phones. This was my biggest challenge in this lesson, as I had not anticipated the students would
finish early, therefore I did not prepare additional activities for them to do.

Events Worth Mentioning

USE OF LOTE: How often I used my LOTE.

I used my LOTE less this lesson. When I found the students finished the activity early, I also found
myself feeling frazzled, and I believe I resorted to English more because of that. I would say my use
of Spanish during this lesson was more like 70% than 90%.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

My biggest surprise was the difficulty I had getting the students to focus on the task at hand
watching the video rather than abusing their access to phones by texting and such.

PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT

I would like to remember this lesson in the future and provide extra opportunities for students who
finish early so I can ensure more effective pacing and higher student engagement.
