Cardiofrequency meters

A cardiofrequency meter is a device that allows athletes to

measure their heart rate during a workout or sports events.
A strap worn around the chest monitors the heartbeat and
sends this information to a device that displays and records
data such as maximum, minimum and average heart rates.
Some cardiofrequency meters include GPS technology that
measures distances covered by an athlete.

The table and scatter plot below contain data recorded by Matteo's
cardiofrequency meter during his last workout session.

1. What is Matteo's maximum heart rate? ______________

2. What is Matteo's minimum heart rate? ______________
3. What is the range of Matteo's heart rate? ____________
4. When did Matteo's heart rate increase? _____________
5. When did Matteo's heart rate decrease? _____________
6. For how long did Matteo work out? _________________

Domain and range
When the function exists

o DOMAIN: Set of all values of the independent variable ( ______ )

Always read from ____________ to ____________

o RANGE: Set of all values of the dependent variable ( _______)

Always read from ____________ to ____________

Ex1:

Domain: [10, 20]

Range: [5, 15]

Initial value and zero(s)
The x and y-intercepts

o INITIAL VALUE: Also called the _________________ of the function.

It is where the graph touches the _________.
A function can NEVER have more than one initial value.

o ZERO(S): Also called the __________________ of the function.

It is where the graph touches the _________.
A function can have more than one zero.

Ex1:
Initial value = 5
Zero(s) = {10}

Maximum and minimum
The extrema

o MAXIMUM: Highest point on the graph

o MINIMUM: Lowest point on the graph

Ex1:
Maximum = 7
Minimum = -2

Increasing, decreasing and constant
The variation

o INCREASING: When it goes up

o DECREASING: _________________
o CONSTANT: When it neither increases nor decreases

Ex1:
Increasing: [4, ]
Decreasing: [2, 4]
Constant: [-5, 2]

Positive and negative
The sign

o POSITIVE: When it is above the ______________

o NEGATIVE: When it is ______________________

3. The graph below provides information concerning a subway stations
passenger traffic over the course of the day.

a) During the day, when is the passenger traffic level at a:

1) maximum?
2) minimum?

b) When is the passenger traffic at 1200?

c) During which time intervals is the passenger traffic more than1200 people?

d) Determine the variation:
